 A forest is a piece of land with many trees.
 Many animals need forests to live and survive.

History of Forest
 Inthe ancient times, forests
were worshipped by people.
 Gautam Buddha, great
emperors like Ashoka and
Akbar wanted to preserve
forests.
 During the British rule in India,
teak, sal and sandalwood trees
were cut down for export.
 After Independence,
government made many rules
to preserve and protect our
forests.
Importance of Forests
 Forestshelps in preventing soil
erosion and floods.
 Theyare home to a number of
plants and variety of animals.
 Theygive us fresh air and
oxygen.
 They are responsible for
maintaining climate of an
area.
 Theygive us timber, firewood,
rubber, bamboo and many
medicinal herbs.

Mountain/Coniferous
Forest
 Stretches from western
Himalayas to eastern
Himalayas.
 It is found in the states of
Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur,
Nagaland.
Kind of vegetation
Oak leaves
 Coniferous trees are found in the
higher regions. They are tall, cone
shaped and have needle like leaves.
 Examples: Chir, Deodar, Fir, Spruce
etc.
 On the lower hills like Shiwalik hills, Pine trees on
Naga, Khasi and Manipur hills and on slopes
the slopes, pine forests are common.
 Trees found in the western part has Walnut tree
broad leaves. Ex- Oak, Walnut.
 Eastern part receives heavy rainfall Ferns
and is lush and green. EX- Bamboo and
fern. Bamboo

 Alpine forests are found in the regions
where there is heavy snowfall.

 Deciduous forest cover


a large part of India.
 Itis found in the
states of Andhra
Pradesh, Odisha,
Jharkhand, Karnataka,
Kerala and Tamil
Nadu.

 Trees found in this region are
tall with broad trunks.
 Some taller trees shed their
leaves in the dry season. Mango Tree

Mango, Neem,
Bamboo, Sheesham, Rosewood
etc.

 Thewood obtained is mainly
used for building houses and
furniture.

Deciduous Forest
Swamp Forest/Tidal Forest
 Found along the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands and the delta
areas of the Ganga and
Brahmaputra rivers.
Deltas are the wetlands which
are formed when the rivers
empties its water and sediments
into another water body, such as
ocean.
 This region is also referred as
Sunderbans.
 Found in West Bengal and
Odisha.
Kind of Vegetation
 Mainly Mangroove trees
along with dates and
palms are found.
 The roots of the mangrove
trees have soft tissues.
 Sundariis a variety of Palms

grows mainly in
Sunderbans.
 These trees have the roots
above the water levels to
breathe through pores.

Wet Evergreen Forest
 Wet Evergreen Forest is
found in the South, along
the Western Ghats,
Andaman and Nicobar
Islands and all along the
North-eastern region.
 Ex- Assam, Arunanchal
Pradesh, Meghalaya and
Tripura.
Kind of Vegetation

 These forests have tall,


straight evergreen trees
that have a buttress trunk.
 These roots help the tree
to keep upright during a
storm.

are very tall and
spread their branches like
a cauliflower.

Goddess of the forests

In Hinduism, Aranyani is
a goddess of the forests and the
animals that dwell within them.She
is worthy of worship for being the
guardian deity of sacred sanctuaries,
woodlands and jungles.

In Bengali, the guardian spirit of the
forest is called Bonbibi and in
Kannada, she is called Vana Durga.

 India’s wildlife is diverse.
 India has a vast forest cover.
 There are almost 500 wildlife sanctuaries.
 Examples: Sunderbans, Hazaribagh etc.
 There are over 100 national parks and 18
biosphere reserves.
 Examples: Corbet, Ranthambore, Kanha,
Gir, Kaziranga national park etc.
 Examples: Nanda Devi, Gulf of Mannar etc.
 India also has many bird sanctuaries.
 Examples: Chilika,Vedanthangal etc.
Protect Mother Nature
 Widespread cutting of trees and
poaching of animals destroys the
environment.
 A numbers of movements have taken
place in India to save the environment.
 Govt. also has many rules and
regulations to protect the
environment.
 Examples of some movements:
1. Chipko Movement- April 1973
(Mandal, Uttarakhand) led by
Sunderlal Bahuguna and others.
2. Narmada Bachao Andolan( Save the
Narmada)
3. Save the tiger
4. Save Kaveri , etc.
