Mean Deviation

This document defines mean deviation and provides formulas to calculate it from a data set. Mean deviation is the average of the absolute deviations from the mean, median, or mode. It measures the average distance data points are from the central tendency. The document gives formulas to calculate mean deviation from individual data sets, discrete distributions, and continuous distributions. It also provides an example of calculating the mean deviation and coefficient of mean deviation from a data set of student weights.

Mean Deviation

Dr. Preeti Jain

Mean Deviation (MD)
Definition
MD is arithmetic average of deviations of all the
values taken from a statistical average (Mean,
Median oar Mode) of the series.
In taking deviations of values the ± signs are
ignored.

That means, negative deviations are also

treated as positive deviations.
Mean deviation may be based on mean,
median or mode. That is deviations are
taken either from mean or median or
made.
