Chapter 9 Space Weather

The document discusses space weather and the phenomena on the sun's surface that affect Earth. It describes granules on the sun's photosphere made of hot plasma, dark sunspots that are locations of large eruptions and can last over a week, the approximately 11-year solar cycle of sunspot appearance and disappearance, and prominences that are huge glowing gas loops over sunspots.

CHAPTER 9 SPACE WEATHER

9.1 ACTIVITIES OF THE SUN THAT AFFECT EARTH

9.1 Activities of the Sun that affect Earth
PHENOMENA THAT OCCUR ON THE
SURFACE OF THE SUN
Phenomena that occur on the surface on the Sun include:
Granules
Sunspots
Solar Cycle
Prominences
Solar Flares
Coronal Mass Ejections
Solar Winds
GRANULES
• The photosphere in the Sun’s atmosphere is made up of
granules.
• The upper part of the convection zone of the plasma is
extremely hot and the temperature can go as high as 5800
Celsius.
• The diameter of the granules can go up to 1000 kilometres.
SUNSPOTS
• They are the dark regions on the surface of the Sun.
• They are dark because their temperature are lower than the
surrounding area.
• They are the location of very large eruptions.
• They will likely last more than a week and always exists in
pairs or groups.
SOLAR CYCLE
• This activity of sunspots appearing and disappearing are call
Solar Cycle.
• It last about 11 years.
PROMINENCE
• Is a huge loop or arched column of glowing gases over the
sunspot.
• The red-glowing looped material is plasma, a hot gas
comprised of electrically charged hydrogen and helium.
