Social inequality exists when opportunities and rewards are distributed unevenly in society based on social positions or statuses. Social inequalities are correlated with gender, ethnicity, race, disabilities, and sexual orientation. Gender inequality affects employment opportunities and privileges for women and LGBT individuals. Ethnic minorities and racial groups also experience inequalities. Persons with disabilities face restrictions in abilities and opportunities. Traditionally, women have had lower social status than men, and LGBT individuals experience discrimination, abuse, and violence as well. Minorities in social structures have less power and privileges than dominant groups.

SOCIAL INEQUALITY
Social inequality is the existence of uneven
opportunities and rewards for a diverse social
positions or statuses within a group or society. It
happens when resources, in whatever nature, are
distributed unevenly in most societies.
SOCIAL INEQUALITIES ARE
CORRELATED ALSO TO;
 (women and LGBT) – gender inequality about job employment,
assigned committees and work assignment, opportunities and
privileges.
 ethnic minorities – An ethnic minority is a group of people who
differ in race or color or in national, religious, or cultural origin
from the dominant group- often the majority population of the
country in which they live.
 racial inequality – ex. The gap between the white and black
Americans. The comparison between Eastern and Western people.
SOCIAL INEQUALITIES ARE
CORRELATED ALSO TO;
 Persons with disabilities – Who are considered persons with
disabilities in the Philippines?
- RA 7277 or the 1992 Philippine Magna Carta for Disabled Persons
defines PWDs as “those suffering from restriction of different
abilities, as a result ofa mental, physical or sensory impairment, to
perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered
normal for a human being."
GENDER AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION
HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO INEQUALITY.
 -Traditionally, women were regarded as placed in the lower social status in the
society compared to men. Men were accorded to have more social and
political rights. In these modern societies, though there are already many
women representations in the civil society, the culture of stereotyping is still
evident. They are also subjected to abuse and violence.
 (RA 9262 is the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004.
The Act classifies violence against women and children (VAWC) as a public
crime.) A similar situation is also experienced by the LGBT (lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender)Human Rights Violations on the Basis of Sexual
Orientation, Gender Identity, and Homosexuality in the Philippines
SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER
IDENTITY AND EXPRESSION (SOGIE)
 Ethnic minorities, as we usually call them taga-bukid (from the hinterlands),
are also subject to social discrimination -the cultural marginalization that they
experience from the dominant majority. They are also victims of stereotyping,
abuse and violence.

 What laws protect minorities?


Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination on
the basis of a person’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER
IDENTITY AND EXPRESSION (SOGIE)
 Persons with disabilities (PWD) or differently-abled persons are also victims of
inequality and deprivedof the opportunities in the society especially in the
employment sector due to their physical impairments.
 Minorities in the social structure. Members of the society that have more
power than others are called dominant members.
Dominant members set the standards in the society. They enjoy more
privileges such as better houses, better schools, and higher income. On the
other hand, those who are barred from such privileges and opportunities are
called the minorities. They are usually denied by the equal treatment of the
majorities or dominant.
