Percentage Grade6

This document discusses the three elements of percentages: the rate, base, and percentage. It defines each element and provides examples of how to identify them in percentage problems. It also shows how to calculate the percentage, base, or rate if two of the three values are known using the formulas: Percentage = Base x Rate Rate = Percentage x 100 / Base Base = Percentage / Rate

PERCENTAGE, BASE
AND RATE
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the percentage, base and rate
2. Distinguish percentage, base and rate
3. Use percentage, base and rate to
understand daily life experiences
There are 3 elements of percent
Percent problems have 3
parts/elements:
a. rate (percent)
b. base (whole)
c. percentage (amount)
Let us identify the percentage, base and
rate
23% of 400 is 92
rate base percentage
Let us identify the percentage, base and
rate
150 is 20% of 750
percentage rate base
01 Percentage
- is a portion, part or
share of the whole (always
without a percent sign)
02 Base
- is the original
amount, usually the
whole
03 Rate
- is the percentage in
relation to the base
(usually with a percent sign)
Underline the percentage, encircle the
rate and box the base
1. 25% of 80 is 20
2. 12 is 33 1 % of 36

3. 37 = 50% x 74
4. 75% x N is 15
5. 30 is 100% of N
01 To solve for the Percentage
Percentage = Base x Rate
P=BXR
P
B R
Find the percentage

What is 18% of 40

P = R x B
= 18% x 40
= 0.18 x 40
P = 7.2
Find the percentage

What is 3 1/3% of 75

P = R x B
= 3 1/3% x 75
= .0333 x 75
P = 2.5

02 To solve for the Rate

Rate = Percentage x 100

Base
R = P x 100 P
B B R
Find the rate
What percent of 120 is 15?
R x B = P
R = P x 100
B
= 15 x 100
120
