Roofing Safety

This document discusses roofing safety. It defines roofing work and describes different types of roofs like fragile roofs, slate and tile roofs, and torch applied roofs. It outlines potential hazards of working on roofs like pitch, moisture, footwear, and tripping hazards. The document recommends performing a risk assessment before roof work and using fall arrest systems, training, considering weather conditions, and using ladders, scaffolding, safety mesh or nets appropriately. It provides safety precautions like keeping the work area clean, avoiding working in extreme weather, wearing proper footwear, maintaining balance and awareness, not overloading oneself, and not dropping materials from the roof.

ROOFING SAFETY
SUBJECT
CODE:BSS(ADFS) &IS--
108
DEFINITION
Roofing work means the hoisting,
storage, application, and removal of
roofing materials and equipment,
including related insulation, sheet
metal, and vapor barrier work and
the construction of the roof deck.
TYPES OF ROOFS
1.Fragile roof
A fragile roof is one that does not safely
support the wait if a person. A frangible
roof may be caused by thickness of the
material span between supports or the
age of the material. The fragility of a
roof should be determined prior to work
starting
2.Slate and tiles roofs
Slate and tiles do not provide a safe
footing, especially when wet. Properly
designed roof ladders or crawling
boards need to be installed to work
safely on these types of roofs.
3.Torch applied roofs
Torch applied roofing operations can be
hazardous. Roofers may sustain series
burns from the torch or the asphalt
being applied. in addition temperatures
generated during torching can start
smoldering fires out of sight, only to
burst into flame latter. Take all
appropriate fire precautions when
performing this type of work
4.Welding thermoplastic
roof membrane
The system to conduct this type of work
use electricity to heat the membranes,
welding them together. Burns and
electrocution are potential hazards with
type of equipment
HAZARDS
There are several factors that contribute to
avoidable accidents while working on roofs

Pitch of the roof

The steeper the pitch, the more difficult it is
to maintain your footing

Moisture
Rain, snow or frost may cause slippery
conditions on the roof
HAZARDS Contd…
Dirt or saw dust
May cause slippery conditions on the roof

Footwear
The traction of shoes/boots varies, always
wear good traction shoes/boots

Tripping hazards
Tools, electric cords etc. can create a
tripping hazard
CONSIDERATIONS FOR
ROOF WORK

1.Perform a risk assessment

Identify the risks that will be encountered
before performing the specific tasks required
for the job getting on and the roof. This is a
major risk point, a secure way to enter and
exit the roof is essential
2.Fall arrest system
 A fall arrest system is required if a
worker may fall from an elevated
position.
 As a general rule, the fall arrest system
should be used if the working height is
greater than 1.8 meters.
 Falling material maintain good
housekeeping on the roof to stop material
that could fall.
3.Training
Roof workers need the knowledge, skill and
experience to work safely.

4.Weather conditions
Work should not occur icy, rainy, or windy
conditions. You can easily be blown off a roof
when carrying roofing materials.

5.Ladders and scaffolding

Make sure they are structurally sound and
installed properly.
6.Safety mesh
If you are working on roof areas without the roofs
then a safety mesh is a must, which should be
installed as soon as the roof is removed. The mesh
should be capable of handling a person’s weight.

7.Safety nets
The safety nets are much similar to safety mesh
and serve the same purpose but the main
advantage over the other is its lightweight and the
ease to handle it. They are mostly used in case of
smaller job locations to prevent free fall.
Safety precautions
 Make sure your work area is clean,
 Never work when the roof is wet or
slippery.
 Avoid working on your roof during
extremely hot or cold weather.
 Wear soft-soled footwear for
optimum traction.
Safety precautions contd…
 Keep your center of gravity low and
over your feet.
 Keep your knees bent and be aware
of things around you.
 Do not carry too much or have your
hands too full.
 Do not drop things or let them roll off
the roof.
