Project PP T

This document presents a group project on seepage modeling. It discusses two problems involving calculating seepage flow rates through dams using a flow net analysis. The first problem involves a cofferdam and calculates the total discharge. The second problem involves a concrete dam and calculates the seepage flow per meter, uplift pressure along the base, and factor of safety against boiling/piping. Step-by-step instructions are provided for constructing and analyzing the flow nets using GeoStudio software. Solutions are also presented for each problem that apply the flow net analysis calculations.

1. The section through a long coffer dam is shown in the figure below. The
coefficient of permeability of the soil is 1 x 10-5 m/s and the soil is
isotropic. Draw the flow net for the coffer dam. Calculate the rate of total
discharge into the cofferdam through seepage.
steps to follow
STEP 1 : OPEN GEOSTUDIO APP
STEP 2 : GO TO SEEP/W ANALYSIS
STEP 3 : GO TO VIEW TAB SECTION AND FIX THE UNITS BASED ON OUR UNITS (METERS ,
KILOGRAM , SECOND etc.)
STEP 4 : GO TO DRAW TAB AND SELECT SKETCH AXES AND GIVE EXACT AXES VALUE BASED ON
OUR QUESTION
STEP4: GO TO DRAW TAB AND CLICK ON DRAW LINE COMMAND
STEP5: DRAW OUR GIVEN PROBLEN EXACTLY BY SEEING ITS CORDINATE FROM QUESTION
STEP6: GO TO DRAW SECTION AND SELECT DRAW REGIONS WHERE WE HAVE TO FILL MATERIALS
STEP7: GO TO DRAW COMMAND AND SELECT DEFINE MATERIALS.
STEP8: AFTER SELECTING MATERIAL GO TO THE MESH COMMAND AND FILL THE MESH IN THE
SELECTED BOUNDARY (FOR A STUDENT VERSION MAXIMUM 500 NUMBER OF MESH IS ALLOWED)
STEP9: GO TO DRAW SECTION AND SELECT BOUNDARY CONDITONS
STEP10: FILL ALL THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS BASED ON OUR REQUIREMENT
1.sol:
Total head loss / seepage head H = 4m
Number of equipotential line = 7
= number of equipotential drops :- (no. of equipotential line-1)
= ( 7-1 ) = 6
Number of stream line = 28
= number of flow channels = ( 28 - 1) = 27
Coefficient of permeability k = 1 x
q = KH ( ) = 1 x x4 ( )
= 1 .8 × 10^-4
2. A concrete dam has been constructed with the dimensions shown in the
following figure. The base of the dam is 3 m and the impervious stratum is
18 m below the ground level. A sheet pile has been provided in the
upstream side of the dam and the length of the pile is 6 m. The
permeability of the soil is 4 x 10-3 cm/s, and the soil is isotropic. Draw the
flow net and compute the seepage flow below the dam per meter length of
the dam. Calculate the uplift pressure along the base of the dam and the
factor of safety against boiling/piping.
