Day 2 Week 7 q2

1. The document provides instructions for teaching students how to estimate quotients through rounding and using compatible numbers. 2. Examples are given of estimating quotients by rounding the divisor to the nearest whole number and cancelling zeros, then performing the division. 3. Students practice estimating quotients and comparing their estimates to the actual answers in order to reinforce the concept.

Drill- Mental Computation

a. Group the class. Each group should have 10

members.
b. Distribute number cards ( 0-9 ) to each group.
c. The teacher division equations.
d. Pupils will solve it mentally and will show the quotient
using the number cards they
are holding.
. Review ( Pick Me Up)
Pick a number written on the cut-outs of flowers.
Tell the place value of the underlined digit and then round it.

490 970 4 414

399 57 888

1 560 73 009

1 873 182 39
. Motivation
Present a picture of a carpenter.

What do carpenters do before buying materials
for building
a house?
Would it be alright to estimate the needed
materials
ahead
of time? Why?

Present this situation to the
class.

Tina and Rose volunteered to

donate ballpens as prizes for a contest
in school. They have ₱100. They want
to know about how many ballpens
they can buy if each ballpen costs
₱4.75.
Ask : What did Tina and Rose volunteered to
donate in school?
What kind of students are they?
Are you willing to help your school? Why?
Analyze the problem.
What are the given facts?
What is asked in the problem?
What operations are you going to use?
?

Do we need the exact/ actual answer in the

problem?
What words suggests that we need only to
estimate
. Presentation

Say : “ Estimating is an educated guess. There are times when an estimate is

needed and not the actual one.”

Say : “ Let us solve and analyze the solution to the problem.”

₱100 ÷ 4.75 → ₱100 ÷ 5 ( the divisor is rounded to the nearest whole number
So 100 ÷ 5 = 20 → estimated quotient

So, Tina and Rose
?
can buy about 20 ballpens as prizes for a contest in school

Say “ There are times when compatible numbers are used to estimate quotients.”
Let us study this example:
625 ÷ 2.5 = N
625 ÷ 2.5 → 600 ÷ 3 → 600 is compatible with 3 since 600 ÷ 3 = 200
Processing the Activities

Ask: How is estimation done in the solution we have in the problem?

What was done first to the divisor and the dividend?
Then, what was cancelled in the rounded divisor and dividend?
Then, what was done next?
Expected answer : We round the divisor and the dividend to the nearest whole
number. Cancelled zeroes in the decimal places then
proceed to dividing.
Say : “ Now, let us compare the actual answer to the estimated one.”
Ask: Are the quotients the same or different?
How far or near is the estimated answer to the actual one?
What will you do if the estimated answer is too large or too small compared
to the actual one?
. Reinforcing the Concept and Skill

Let the pupils study Explore and Discover on page ___ of the LM Math
Grade 5.
Ask the pupils to do exercises under Get Moving on page ___ of LM Math
Grade
Five.
Give more activities.
Estimate the quotient.
1. 625 ÷ 1.25 3. 225 ÷ 7.5 5. 48 ÷ 1.2
2. 625 ÷ 2.6 4. 875 ÷ 12.5
Summarizing the Lesson
Lead the pupils to generalize as follows.

To estimate quotients, round the divisor

to the highest place value and use
compatible numbers for the dividend to
divide. This will make your estimated
quotient reasonable.
Applying to New and Other Situations
A. Estimate the following using compatible
numbers.
1. 3.257 ÷ 5.8 2. 14.08 ÷ 8.8 3. 196.7 ÷
4.8
B. Estimate the following using rounding off.
1. 978 ÷ 8.8 2. 842 ÷ 4.42 3. 17.85 ÷ 9
c. Assessment

Find the best estimated quotient.

1. 4 308 ÷ 61.75 4. 559.8 ÷ 785
2. 1 019 ÷ 51.5 5. 19 785 ÷ 30.8
3. 88.975 ÷ 968

D. Home Activity
Remediation
Estimate the quotient using compatible numbers.
1. 4 208 ÷ 66.75
2. 559.8 ÷ 775
3. 1 209 ÷ 50.5
