7.4 Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form

This document discusses solving polynomial equations in factored form. It contains two main points: 1) Students will be able to use the Zero-Product Property to set each factor of a factored polynomial equal to 0 to find the roots or solutions. 2) Students will be able to factor polynomials by finding the greatest common factor (GCF) of the terms before setting the factored form equal to 0 and using the Zero-Product Property. Several examples are provided to demonstrate these techniques.

Solving Polynomial Equations in Factored Form

1. Students will be able to use the Zero-Product Property.

2. Students will be able to factor polynomials using the GCF.

1. Students will be able to use the Zero-Product Property.

Zero-Product Property – if the product of two real numbers is 0 (zero),

then at least one of the numbers is 0 (zero).

If ab=0, then a and/or b have to be 0 (zero).

2 x( x  4)  0

2x  0 or x40
x0 or x4
We say the roots, or solutions, or zeros are x0 and x4
( x  3)( x  9)  0

x 3  0 or x9  0
x3 or x  9

The roots, or solutions, or zeros are x3 and x  9

You Try!

( z  4)( z  6)  0

z40 or z 6  0
z4 or z6

z  4,6
This is calling solving the equation.

(2 x  7)(2 x  7)  0

2 x  7 or 2x  7
x   72 or x  72

x   72 , 72
or x   72
This is calling solving the equation.

The equation has a double root or a repeated root of x 1
This is calling solving the equation.

( x  1)( x  3)(2 x  5)  0

x 1  0 or x3  0 or 2x  5  0
x  1 or x3 or x   52

x   52 , 1,3
