Calcite

Calcite is a common mineral composed of calcium carbonate that forms in shallow marine and sedimentary environments. It is mined from underground deposits and quarries around the world. Calcite occurs in many colors and shapes, and is one of the most widely used minerals. It has applications in construction as limestone and marble, in cement production, and as a pigment, abrasive, and pharmaceutical.

Origin
Latin
Calx + -ite
(Lime) (suffix used for minerals)

Calcite is a common mineral consisting of

crystallized calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is
extremely common and found throughout the
world.
Calcite occurrences
Calcite is formed in shallow marine settings using CO2, it is also found in
sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Calcite can form by direct
precipitation from waters rich in calcium. As concentrations increase or the
amount of water decreases crystals of solid calcite crystals form.
Mining calcite
It is usually mined from deep underground or quarried
from the surface of the Earth. During mining the calcite is
sorted out into different grades depending upon the colors
as they fetch different prices and, because their suitability
depends upon the colors. The mineral is mostly used in
the form of fine powder.
Calcite locations
Calcite occurs in diverse crystal shapes and colors. Calcite found
throughout the world, most notably in: Tsumeb Mine, Namibia, Brazil,
Germany, Romania, England, Canada, China, Pakistan, Mexico,
Russia, New Jersey, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee, Kansas, Indiana,
Illinois, Ohio, Nevada, Missouri, Colorado and Massachusetts.
Calcite uses
Calcite crystal’s properties make it one of the most widely used
minerals. It is used as a building material, abrasive, agricultural soil
treatment, construction aggregate, pigment, pharmaceutical, and other
applications. It has more applications than nearly any other mineral.

CALCITE AS LIMESTONE CALCITE AS MARBLE

Calcite uses in construction

Calcite, in the form of limestone and marble, is mostly used by the

construction industry. For thousands of years, these rocks have been
utilized as dimension stones and in mortar. Many of Egypt's pyramids
were built with limestone blocks as the principal building material.

In modern construction calcite is used in the form of limestone and

marble to produce concrete and cement. Which are then used to make
buildings, highways, bridges, walls, and many other structures.
Interesting calcite facts
 Calcite is commonly used to make cement.
 Limestone, which is used in chalk, is made of calcite.
 It is very common to find calcite in the shells of certain marine animals.
 When large, underwater rocks containing calcite are exposed to acid,
they dissolve and make caves.
 Calcite emits light when it is heated.
 Calcite is used in optical instruments because it has the ability to make
objects appear doubled.
