DC Filters

DC filters are used to filter the output of rectifiers. They allow DC components to pass through but block AC components, producing a steady DC voltage. Common types of DC filters include the L filter, C filter, LC filter, and pie or CLC filter. The L filter uses an inductor, the C filter uses a capacitor, and the LC filter combines an inductor and capacitor to filter ripple more effectively regardless of load resistance. A pie or CLC filter connects capacitors and an inductor in a pi-shaped configuration. Voltage regulators are also used to maintain a constant DC output voltage and further block AC ripple that filters cannot fully remove. Common voltage regulator types are series and shunt regulators.

DC FILTERS

WHAT IS DC FILTER?

 The filter is a device that allows passing the dc component of

the load and blocks the ac component of the rectifier output.
 Thus the output of the filter circuit will be a steady dc voltage.
TYPES OF DC FILTER

 L FILTER
C FILTER
 LC FILTER
 PIE OR CLC FILTER
L FILTER

 This type of filter is also called choke filter. It consists of an inductor L

which is inserted between the rectifier and the load resistance RL. The
rectifier contains A.C components as well as D.C components. When
the output passes through the inductor, it offers a high resistance to the
A.C component and no resistance to D.C components. Therefore, A.C
components of the rectified output is blocked and only D.C
components reached at the load.

C FILTER

 It consists of an capacitor C which is inserted between the rectifier

and the load resistance RL. The rectifier contains A.C components
as well as D.C components. When the output passes through the
capacitor, it offers a high resistance to the D.C component and no
resistance to A.C components. Therefore, A.C components of the
rectified output is grounded and only D.C components reached at the
load.

LC FILTER

 In inductor filter, the ripple factor is directly proportional to the load

resistance. On the other hand in a capacitor filter, it is varying
inversely with the load resistance. Hence if we combine the inductor
filter with the capacitor the ripple factor will become almost
independent of the load filter. It is also known as inductor input
filter, choke input filter, L input or LC-section.

PIE OR CLC FILTER
 This is another type of filter circuit which is very commonly used. It
has capacitor at its input and hence it is also called as a Capacitor
Input Filter. Here, two capacitors and one Inductor are connected in
the form of п shaped network. A capacitor in parallel, then an
Inductor in series, followed by another capacitor in parallel makes
this circuit.

VOLTAGE REGULATOR

 All electronic voltage regulators will have a stable voltage reference

source which is provided by the reverse breakdown voltage
operating diode called zener diode. The main reason to use a voltage
regulator is to maintain a constant dc output voltage. It also blocks
the ac ripple voltage that cannot be blocked by the filter.
TYPES OF VOLTAGE REGULATOR

 SERIES VOLTAGE REGULATOR.

 SHUNT VOLTAGE REGULATOR.
