Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It most commonly affects children ages 5 to 15 who are frequently exposed to germs at school. Signs and symptoms include sore throat, swollen tonsils, fever, white spots on the tonsils, and enlarged lymph nodes. A throat swab or blood test can help diagnose the cause. Treatment involves antibiotics for bacterial infections, pain relievers, fluids, and rest. In severe cases, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be required.

DiagnosTic TEST:
Throat Swab
A throat swab, where a sterile swab is rubbed over the
back of your throat to collect a sample of secretions.
The sample is then sent to the laboratory to check for
signs of streptococcus.

Complete Blood Count

A blood test, known as complete blood cell count
(CBC), to identify the cause of the infection. A high
white blood cell count or the presence of abnormal

cells is an indication of a viral infection.

Medical Management
Antibioics
Penicillin taken by mouth for 10 days is the most
common antibiotic treatment prescribed for tonsillitis
caused by group A streptococcus.

Antipyretic analgesics
Combine an analgesic action with the ability to lower
body temperature in fever (pyrexia). In fact, most
drugs in this group combine analgesic and antipyretic
properties with anti-inflammatory properties
