Here are some lower-cost options Big Apple Manager could consider to improve physical security while addressing cost concerns:
- Upgrade existing security measures like access controls, alarms, cameras rather than completely relocating. This provides security without the full relocation costs.
- Consider co-locating servers in a third-party data center rather than building/maintaining their own. This outsources maintenance/upgrades while gaining a secure, reliable facility.
- Implement a cloud-based disaster recovery plan to mitigate on-site risks. If a threat occurred, operations could continue in the cloud until an on-premise solution is restored.
- Segment the most critical systems requiring highest security to a separate, more secure on-

Physical
Security Big Apple Financials, Inc.,
Group 5: Alfonso, Bondoc, Buduan, Canlas, Del Rosario, Tongol Background
• Big Apple Financials, Inc., is a financial services
firm located in New York City. • The company keeps client investment and account information on a server at its Brooklyn data center • The company’s data center is in the basement of a rented building. Company management believes that the location is secure enough to protect their data from physical threat. • The company’s auditor, have expressed concern that some of the measures at the current location are inadequate and that newer alternatives should be explored • Management has expressed concern about the high cost of purchasing new equipment and relocating its data center Why are Big Apple’s auditors stressing the need to have a better physical environment for the server? • Auditors asses the physical environment so as to help mitigate risk and create a secure environment for its server. Any flaw in the physical environment could be an area of potential exposure that can impact the quality of information, accounting records, transaction processing, and the effectiveness of the internal control. A potentional exposure may turn into a real threat that could destroy the servers and the data stored, this could then impair their ability to function as a business because a lot of process still needs to be done (like disaster recovery planning) to operate normally again. In this case, their current software controls are not tight enough to protect their servers. And because of that additional controls are needed. Describe six control features that contribute to the physical security of the computer center. 1. Location of the computer center that affects the risk to natural disaster. 2. The computer center should be in a single-story building that constructed (ng maayos) with controlled access 3. Persons authorized to access them should be the operators and other employees working in the center. 4. Computers can be use at its best when it is in an air- conditioned place 5. An effective fire suppression system is needed because fire could seriously endanger the computers in the company. 6. The company should have high fault tolerance for cases that the computers are having failure but they can still be operated properly. Big Apple Manager is concerned about the cost of relocating the data center. Discuss some options open to them that could reduce their operating costs and provide the security the auditor’s seek.
