Pygmalion by George

Bernard Shaw
Introduction

 Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is a play about a

young flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who is transformed
into a proper lady by the linguist Henry Higgins. The
play follows the journey of Eliza as she learns to speak
and act like a lady.
The most important events in act 2&3:

 Higgins' housekeeper, Mrs. Pearce, comes in and

announces that a young woman is here to see Higgins.
When the girl enters, Higgins recognizes her as the flower
girl from the previous night.
 Eliza is upset and prepares to leave, but Higgins gives her
a chocolate, and he tells her that if she learns to speak
better, she will ride taxis all around town.
The most important events in act 2&3:

 Eliza's
father appears and attempts to extort
money from Higgins and Pickering.
 When he saw Eliza, he did not recognize her,
and when he left, Eliza told him that all he
came for was money.
 The act ended with Higgins admitting to
Pickering that their job would be difficult.
The most important events in act 2&3:

 Higgins and Pickering have been working diligently to

teach Eliza proper English and etiquette. They have also
been teaching her how to dress and behave in a manner
befitting a lady of her station. Eliza has been making great
progress, and Higgins wanted to test her.
 In Act Three, Higgins went to his mother and told her that
he had found a flower girl and that he would like to see his
progress. So he asked his mother to meet her.
The most important events in act 2&3:

 Higgins assures his mother that Eliza will be on her

best behavior, and talk only about the weather and
other people's health.
 Mrs. Higgins says that Eliza will have all "the
manners and habits that disqualify a fine lady from
earning her own living," without the money to support
such a lifestyle. But Pickering and Higgins aren't
worried, and say they'll find her a job. They leave,
laughing. Mrs. Higgins is upset, and exclaims, "Oh,
men! men!! men!!!"
The end.
