Exponential Notation

Here are the steps to solve these evaluation problems: 1. 1,000 - 100 = 900 2. 25 x 25 = 625 3. 121 - 5 = 116 4. 14 x 14 = 196 5. 49 ÷ 7 = 7 Therefore, the numerical values of the expressions are: 1. 900 2. 625 3. 116 4. 196 5. 7

Generalization
A number in exponential notation has a base and an
exponent.
• The base is the repeated factor. The exponent tells the
number of times the base is to be multiplied by itself.
• Any nonzero number with a zero exponent is equal to 1.
• Any number raised to the exponent 1 is equal to the
number itself.
• The number of zeros found after the digit 1 in a power of
10 corresponds to the exponent of 10.
