GCSE OCR 1.2 The Units of Data Storage

This document discusses units of data storage and capacity. It defines common units like bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes. It explains that a byte is 8 bits and a kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Larger units like megabytes and gigabytes are multiples of 1024. The document also covers converting between units and distinguishes between data capacity, which is measured in bytes, and transfer speeds, which are measured in bits.

Data capacity vs transfer speeds

• Symbols for units uses capital letters to show they are

representing bytes not bits:
• KB, MB, GB, TB, PB

• The capacity of drives and file sizes is measured in bytes using

capital letter symbols.

• Data transfer speeds over networks are measured in bits using

a lower case second letter.

• So 1MB is not the same as 1Mb. It is eight times bigger!
