Section - 06 Displacement Procedures

The document discusses displacement procedures for drilling fluids. Displacement involves substituting one fluid for another in a well, using specially designed spacers to separate the fluids. The displacement procedure involves conditioning the initial fluid, preparing spacers and equipment, running pipe to the displacement depth, pumping spacers, and then pumping the new displacement fluid.

Drilling Fluids Technology

Displacement Overview
Displacement: substituting fluid in well with a different
fluid. Specially designed spacers are formulated to provide
separation of the two fluids. Displacement can be:
 mud to mud
 brine to mud
 mud to brine
Displacement methods include:
 direct, fluid is displaced directly
 indirect: uses large amounts of water before
circulating the new fluid

Displacement Procedure
To ensure a displacement with minimal contamination,
follow this displacement procedure:

1. Condition the fluid.

2. Prepare spacers.
3. Prepare the equipment and the well.
‐ Flush and clean all lines, tanks, and manifolds
that will contact the displacement fluid.
‐ Secure water outlets to prevent dilution and/or
contamination of the displacement fluid.

4. Run pipe (i.e., drill pipe, tubing) to displacement

depth.
5. Pump spacers.
6. Pump displacement fluid.
