HAZARDS AND
RISK
WHAT IS
HAZARDS?
• Hazards in the workplace occur when the
working environment can cause injury,
illness or death.
• The hazards can result from many of the
different aspects of the working world,
including equipment, dangerous materials,
unsafe working practices and the behavior
of people.
WHAT IS
RISKS?
• In simple terms, risk is the possibility of
something bad happening. Risk involves
uncertainty about the
effects/implications of an activity with
respect to something that humans value,
often focusing on negative, undesirable
consequences.
FIVE
METHODS OF
CONTROL
1. ELIMINATION
• Elimination of a specific
hazard or hazardous work
process, or preventing it from
entering the workplace, is the
most effective method of
control.
• It is the process of removing
the hazard from the workplace.
2. SUBSTITUTION
• It is a hazard control strategy in
which a material or process is
replaced with another that is
less hazardous.
• It is sometimes grouped with
elimination because, in effect, you
are removing the first substance or
hazard from the workplace. The
goal, obviously, is to choose a new
chemical that is less hazardous
than the original.
3. GOOD HOUSEKEEPING
• It is essential to prevent
the accumulation of
hazardous or toxic
materials (e.g., build-up
of dust or contaminant
on ledges, or beams), or
hazardous conditions
(e.g., poor stockpiling).
