Methods in Controlling Hazards and Risk

The document discusses hazards and risks in the workplace and methods for controlling them. It defines hazards as aspects of the working environment that can cause injury, illness, or death, while risks refer to the possibility of something bad happening. It outlines five methods for controlling hazards and risks: elimination, substitution, good housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and use of personal protective equipment. The goal of the lesson is for students to be able to distinguish hazards and risks, identify control methods, and apply appropriate control methods.

At the end of the lesson, the student
should be able to:

specific workplace.
B.Identify the methods in controlling
hazards and risks in a specific
workplace.

WHAT IS
?
HAZARDS AND
RISK
WHAT IS
HAZARDS?
• Hazards in the workplace occur when the
working environment can cause injury,
illness or death.
• The hazards can result from many of the
different aspects of the working world,
including equipment, dangerous materials,
unsafe working practices and the behavior
of people.
WHAT IS
RISKS?
• In simple terms, risk is the possibility of
something bad happening. Risk involves
uncertainty about the
effects/implications of an activity with
respect to something that humans value,
often focusing on negative, undesirable
consequences.
FIVE
METHODS OF
CONTROL
1. ELIMINATION

• Elimination of a specific
hazard or hazardous work
process, or preventing it from
entering the workplace, is the
most effective method of
control.
• It is the process of removing
the hazard from the workplace.
2. SUBSTITUTION
• It is a hazard control strategy in
which a material or process is
replaced with another that is
less hazardous.
• It is sometimes grouped with
elimination because, in effect, you
are removing the first substance or
hazard from the workplace. The
goal, obviously, is to choose a new
chemical that is less hazardous
than the original.
3. GOOD HOUSEKEEPING

• It is essential to prevent
the accumulation of
hazardous or toxic
materials (e.g., build-up
of dust or contaminant
on ledges, or beams), or
hazardous conditions
(e.g., poor stockpiling).
4. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

• Being prepared for emergencies

means making sure that the
necessary equipment and
supplies are readily available
and that employees know what
to do when something
unplanned happens such as a
release, spill, fire, or injury.
5. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT (PPE)
• Personal protective equipment
(PPE) includes items such as
respirators, protective clothing
such as gloves, face shields,
eye protection, and footwear
that serve to provide a barrier
between the wearer and the
chemical or material.
Why is it important to monitor and
review your hazard control
program and methods?

It is important to monitor both the

hazard and the control method to make
sure that the control is working
effectively and that exposure to the
hazard is reduced or eliminated.
Direction: Connect the given hazards to the appropriate methods
in controlling hazards and risks.
