Diffusivity Equation

The document discusses the diffusivity equation, which models unsteady radial flow of compressible fluids. The diffusivity equation relates pressure, radius, and time, showing that pressure at any radius is a function of time. It is derived by equating the rate of volume change from fluid expansion to the rate of fluid flow based on Darcy's law. The diffusivity constant determined by permeability, porosity, viscosity, and compressibility characterizes how quickly the fluid will redistribute in response to a pressure change. Simplified cases are shown for incompressible fluid and steady-state flow with pressure dropping at the same rate at all radii.

DIFFUSIVITY EQUATION

BACK GROUND
1. If w(x,t) represents the temperature
at a position x at time t in a uniform
conducting rod with perfectly insulated
sides then the partial derivatives wxx and
wt satisfy a differential equation of the
form
wxx =

This equation is called the one dimensional heat

equation. The value of the positive constant C2 is
determined by the material from which rod is made.
2. In chemistry w(x,t) represent the
concentration of a dissolved substance, a salt
for instance, diffusivity along a tube filled
with liquid . the value of w(x,t) is the
concentration at a point x at time t.
Basic Transient flow equation
• Continuity equation
• Transport equation
• Compressibility equation
• Initial and boundary condition
Assumptions and Limitation
• Radial , homogeneous
• Isotropic Porous medium
• Uniform thickness
• Single phase flow
• Laminar flow
• Rock and fluid properties independent of
pressure.
DIFFUSIVITY EQUATION
(The unsteady state radial flow of compressible fluid)
• Let the rate of flow at any radius r+dr be q reservoir
barrels per day. Then the rate of flow at radius r will
be larger by the amount dq which is caused by the
expansion of the fluid in dropping the pressure to P
from P + dP across the ring shaped element and the
expansion of fluid is contained by that ring shaped
element of thickness dr. where the pressure is
dropping at the rate dP/dt psi/day.
Unsteady state flow
Radius of investigation
• Radius of investigation represents the distance
that transient effects have traveled into the
reservoir. A pressure transient is created when
a disturbance such as a change in rate occurs at
a well. As time progresses, the pressure
transient advances further and further into the
reservoir.
• Initial condition is t=0 that is Pi = intial
reservoir pressure
• Final boundary condition= is infinite and
constant flow rate
• Permeability
• Porosity
• Viscosity
• Time
• Rock and fluid comprssibility
The volume of fluid contained in the ring shaped element
V= - - - - (1)

From the statement of the compressibility

dV = -CVdP ------(2)

Put the value of V from (1) in (2)

dV =

dV = -----(3)
Now the rate of change of volume at any time is the
rate of expansion of fluid from the element

- - - - (4)
From the statement of the Darcy’s law

- - - - -(5)
Equating (4) and (5) and rearranged

- - - - -(6)

= diffusivity constant

- - - - - (7)
The diffusivity constant is the group of terms
determines the rate at which fluid will read just in
response to a pressure distribution imposed on the
system. This same group of terms encountered for
dimensionless time conversion and for the
readjustment time.

The diffusivity equation is the relationship between

pressure, radius and time, and indicates that the
pressure at any radius in the radial flow system is a
function of time.
Let there be a incompressible fluid with C= 0 , then
diffusivity equation become
- - - - (8)

let there be a steady state system with bounded

drainage radius and fluid is compressible then the
pressure drop at any radius would be constant i-e
pressure falling anywhere at the same rate
