Sampling

The document proposes automating the manual process of sampling hot metal in blast furnaces using an industrial robotic manipulator. Currently, sampling is done by workers who are exposed to dangerous high temperatures and toxic dust. The automated system would use a robotic arm equipped with probes, controlled by an Arduino circuit board, to remotely sample hot metal and reduce human hazards. Potential benefits include increased productivity and safety by eliminating direct worker exposure, while challenges include the high costs and developing materials that can withstand high temperatures. The proposed budget for the automated system is approximately 31,000 INR.

INTRODUCTION
Sampling of hot metal in Blast Furnace is done manually. Since the person is supposed to come
in the close proximity of Blast Furnace in order to do the same which makes it dangerous.
Sampling is gruelling job.High temperature and toxic dust make the task especially unhospitable
for humans. But for robots, and an experienced automation integrator, hot metal sampling is no
sweat. Automating the machine tending tasks reduced the number of workers .

Sampler is specifically designed for steel plants and so the managing of collisions and other
challenges are fully integrated and available in automatic way, drastically cutting down the
human intervention.

Steel company Riva Acciaio of Italy do robotic sampling of EAF hot metal.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
The sampling system uses industrial robots as the platform, combined with robot application
technology, detection technology and robot visual recognition technology to complete the
robot’s automatic installation of probes.
The automatic robotic manipulator with the probe extends into high- temperature molten
steel for sampling.

After this system is automated, it can reduce the human interface, which is of great
importance towards safety commitment of Tata Steel, reducing the life-threatening hazards
of workers.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

The robotic manipulator consist of a servo

motor which is used for angular rotation .
It works on the principle of fleming’s right hand
rule and is controlled using an Arduino circuit
board. Arduino UNO is used as the brain of the
robotic arm which is programmed in such a way
that the robot manipulator is controlled.

BENEFITS
Productivity
Eliminating human interference would help in increasing productivity

Quality
Overall work quality can be improved with overall work process optimization.

Safety
Promotes safe behaviour
Commitment of zero harm to employees and contract workers

Morale
Reduces labor intensity of workers.
BUSINESS POTENTIAL

Extension
1.It could be further installed in other areas of TATA Steel where sampling is required to be done like in
LD’s.

Expansion
2.This could be even expanded in other units and subsidiaries of TATA Steel where sampling is required to
be done.

3. Not only in TATA Steel but this could even be installed in other integrated steel companies.
CHALLENGES

Installation

• High initial installation cost

Material requirement

• High temperature resistant material.

WAY FORWARD

• The robot should have the camera system to recognize the

different types of probe .
• Also, it should reject probes identified as faulty by the measuring
system and set aside probes that malfunction during measuring,
for analysis later.

• Fixing robot’s hand trajectory to avoid collision with any

equipment

• It could be made movable.
