Three Types of Claim


WHAT IS A CLAIM?

A claim is an arguable
statement that defines your
goal of the essay.
WHAT IS A CLAIM?

It is the central statement of a


text where the writer tries to
prove his points by providing
details, explanations, and
other types of evidence.
WHAT IS A CLAIM?
Examples:
1. Covid-19 is deadly.
2. Covid-19 and flu spread in similar ways.
3. You will have Covid-19 if you have low body
resistance.
4. You should wear face mask and face shield.
5. Tawa-tawa is the cure for Covid-19.
Characteristics of a good claim:
• A claim should be argumentative and
debatable.
Example: Men are best in Math than women.

• A claim should be specific and focused.


Example: Men are better in Math.
Characteristics of a good claim:
• A claim should be interesting and
engaging.

• A claim should be logical.


Example: Smoking is dangerous to
one's health.

• It asserts that a condition existed,
exists, or will exists and are based on
facts or data.

• Inferences made are based on data,


documents, scientific observation, and
research.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER TO CHECK IF
A STATEMENT IS A CLAIM OF FACT:
1. Can we investigate it through
research or interviews?
2. Did it happen?
Claim of Fact
Examples:
• Covid-19 and flu spread in similar
ways.
• Cancer is a common disease but it is
not contagious.
Claim of Fact
Examples:
• The oldest known disease in the world is
leprosy.
• The climate will get warmer in the next
few years because of global warming.
• Social distancing is important during the
coronavirus pandemic.
Claim of Policy
• Statements that argue that
something needs to be done. May it
be making a law or calling for action.

• A claim of policy usually has the


modals should, must, and ought to.

QUESTION TO ANSWER TO CHECK IF A
STATEMENT IS A CLAIM OF POLICY:

1. What should be done?


Claim of Policy
Examples:
• Legislation must be passed to stop
the sale of cigarettes.
• Marijuana should not be legalized
because many individuals will abuse
it.
Claim of Policy
Examples:
• A dress code should be introduced for all students.
• Texting while driving should be an offense
punishable by jail time.
• Parents should not only be aware of how their
children are using social media, but also understand
the potential positive and negative impacts of social
media use.
Claim of Value

• A claim that is based on


preference such as likes or
dislikes, good or bad.

• Usually compares two ideas


against one another.

QUESTION TO ANSWER TO CHECK IF A
STATEMENT IS A CLAIM OF VALUE:

1. Is it good or bad?
2. Is it valuable or not valuable?
Claim of Value

Examples:
• Animal testing is the worst way
to check medical products.
• Honesty is the best policy.
Claim of Value

Examples:
• The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is
the best team in PBA.
• Palawan is a better place to go for
summer vacation than Boracay.
• Capital punishment is unjust.
