Types of Communication Strategies

Nomination – involves the opening and establishing of

a topic in a conversation

Jasmine, may I talk to you about our science project?

Learn about It!

Restriction – involves limiting what the participants can

contribute to the conversation or discussion

If you had to choose just three words to describe yourself, what

would those three words be?
Learn about It!

Turn-taking – refers to the process in which a

participant stops speaking and yields the floor to
another participant so that he or she can speak

Vanessa: Do you think this is already okay? Or should we add

more designs?
Hazel: I think this is good to go. Adding more designs would
probably make it look cluttered and overwhelming.
Vanessa: Yeah, you’re right.
Learn about It!

Topic control – occurs when the main or assigned

speaker manipulates the discussion in order to maintain
its flow without moving away from or changing the topic

That’s a good question, but it’s no longer connected to our topic.

Let’s discuss this first, and I can answer that question later.

Topic shifting – occurs when one intentionally or

unintentionally changes the direction of the flow of ideas
in a conversation

Ryan: Were you able to watch the basketball game on television

last night?
Ruel: Yes. It was a really good game. It made me miss playing
basketball. Would you like to play a game over the weekend? I’ll
invite some of our classmates too.

Jennie: What is it? Go ahead and tell me. I won’t yell at you.
Alexa: Well . . . You let me borrow a dress so that I’ll have a costume for the play, right? The thing is, I—
or rather—my sister got ketchup on it as I got home.
Jennie: Oh no. Is it permanently stained?
Alexa: I don’t know yet. I gave it to my mom so that she could try to get the stain out. I’ll know later if
she was able to get rid of the stain. If she hasn’t, I’ll take your dress to a laundromat to have it
professionally treated.
Jennie: I see. I appreciate it that you told me right away.
Alexa: So you’re not angry?
Jennie: I’m a bit upset about the dress, but I’m not angry. By the way, are you done with your math
homework?
Alexa: Not yet. I have to do it now before our lunch break is over. Would you like to go with me to the
library?
Jennie: I’m done with mine, and I think I need to speak with Carla about our science project. Let’s talk
later, okay? Bye!
