KOE-076/ Unit-I
Introduction:
Value Education:
• The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is
valuable’ for human happiness is called value
education. Value education is important to help
everyone in improving the value system that he/she
holds and puts it to use.

• Value education enables us to understand our needs

and visualize our goals correctly and also helps to
remove our confusions and contradictions and
bring harmony at all levels.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
Need for Value Education:
• Correct identification of our aspirations: It enables
us to understand our needs and visualize our goals
correctly and also indicate the direction for their
fulfillment.

• Understanding universal human values to fulfill

our aspirations in continuity: Values form the basis
for all our thoughts, behaviors and actions. Once
we know what is valuable to us, these values becomes
the basis, the anchor for our actions.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
• Complementarily of values and skills. To fulfill our
aspirations both values and skills are necessary.
When we identify and set the right goals and
produced in right direction.

• Evaluation of our beliefs. Each one of us believes in

certain things and we base our values on these beliefs,
be they false or true which may or may not be true
in reality. These believes come to us from what we
read, see, hear, what our parents tells us, our friends
talk about, what the magazines talk of, what we see
from TV etc.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
• Technology and human values. The present
education system has become largely skill-based.
Science and Technology can only help to provide the
means to achieve what is considered valuable.
Value Education is a crucial missing in the present
education system. Because of this deficiency, most
of our efforts may prove to be counterproductive and
serious crises at the individual, societal and
environmental level are manifesting.

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Self-Exploration:
• Self-Exploration is the process to find out what is valuable
to me by investigating within myself, what is right for me,
true for me, has to be judged within myself.

• Through Self-Exploration we get the value of our self.

• We live with different entity (family, friends, air, soil, water,

trees, etc.) and we want to understand our relationship
with all these.

• The main focus of Self-Exploration is myself - the human

being.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
Process of Self-Exploration:

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Basic Human Aspirations:

• Our basic aspirations are happiness (mutual

fulfillment) and prosperity (mutual prosperity).

• Happiness is ensured by the relationships with

other human beings.

• Prosperity is ensured by working on physical

facilities.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
Happiness & Prosperity:
• Happiness may be defined as being in
harmony/synergy in the state/situation that I live
in. “A state or situation in which I live, if there
is harmony in it then I like to be in that state
/situation.The state of liking is happiness.”
Whereas, prosperity is the “feeling of having
or making available more than required
physical facilities”.

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Program To Fulfill The Basic
Human Aspirations:

KOE-076/ Unit-I
• Right Understanding: This refers to higher order human
skills – the need to learn and utilize our intelligence
most effectively. (Basis- natural acceptance)

• Good Relationships: This refers to the interpersonal

relationships that a person builds in his or her life – at
home, at the workplace and in society.

• Physical Facilities: This includes the physiological

needs of individuals and indicates the necessities as well
as the comforts of life. It means the feeling of having or
being able to have more physical facilities than is needed.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
Presently, as we look around, we find most of
the people in the following two categories:

• SVDD – Sadhan Viheen Dukhi Daridra

• SSDD – Sadhan Sampan n Dukhi Daridra
•SSSS – Sadhan Sampann Sukhi Samridha
•Before we explain these we should have a
clear understanding of ‘Desires’.

KOE-076/ Unit-I
• Desires are of

1. Materialistic: Food, shelter, clothes and

physical facilities which are quantifiable

2. Non- materialistic: It is qualitative in nature

like respect, trust, happiness, recognition,
peace etc

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Need for Family and Relationship for a Human
Being:

• We live in a family. In family we have relationships

where we interact with other human beings.

• Family is the foundation of society, and provides the

basis of continuity of human tradition on the earth.

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Harmony in the Family:
1. Relationship is-between I1 & I2.

2. There are feelings in relationship- of one I

with other.

3. These feelings can be recognized- they are

finite.

4.Their fulfillment and evaluation leads to

Mutual Happiness.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
Important Questions:
Q1.How does Value Education helps in fulfilling one’s
aspirations?
Q2.Values and skill complement each other. Elaborate.
Q3.Define Self-Exploration. What is the content of Self-
Exploration?
Q4. “Natural Acceptance is innate, invariant and
universal”. Explain this statement with an example.
Q5.What is your present vision of a happy and prosperous life?

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Need for Family and Relationship for a Human
Being:

• We live in a family. In family we have relationships

where we interact with other human beings.

• Family is the foundation of society, and provides the

basis of continuity of human tradition on the earth.

KOE-076/ Unit-I
Harmony in the Family:
1. Relationship is-between I1 & I2.

2. There are feelings in relationship- of one I

with other.

3. These feelings can be recognized- they are

finite.

4. Their fulfillment and evaluation leads to

Mutual Happiness.
KOE-076/ Unit-I
1.Trust: To be assured that the other human being wants to
make me happy & prosperous.
Verify the following (intention)
1a. I want to make myself happy 2a. I
want to make the other happy
3a. The others want to make himself happy/ herself happy
4a. The other wants to make me happy
What is the answer
(competence)
1a. I am able to make myself happy
2a. I am able to make the other always happy
3a. The other is able to make himself always happy
4a. The other is able to make me always happy
KOE 076/ Unit-I
• The first four questions are related to our
natural acceptance i.e. intention and the next
four to our competence.
“To be assured that the intention of the other
is always correct is trust”
• We generally evaluate ourselves on the basis
of our intention and other on the basis of their
competence.
• If we have trust on intention, we have a
feeling of being related to the other & we start
helping the other to improve his competence,
if he does not have.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

2. Respect: Respect is right evaluation.
Need of ‘I’ is that ‘I’ should be evaluated as I am, I
should evaluate others as they are. If I don’t do this, it is
disrespect.
Respect = right evaluation
Disrespect:
Over evaluation- To evaluate more than what it is
Under evaluation- To evaluate less than what it is
Otherwise evaluation- To evaluate other than what it is.
The other is similar to me and the difference could only
be at the level of understanding.

Human Behavior:
• It includes the way they act based on different
factors such as genetics, social norms, core faith
and attitude.
• Behavior is impacted by certain traits each individual
has and changes throughout an individual’s
life, as they move through different stages of
life.
• For Example: Adolescence, Parenthood and
Retirement.
KOE 076/ Unit-I

nine values in relationship:
1. Trust
2. Respect
3. Affection
4. Care
5. Guidance
6. Reverence
7. Glory
8. Gratitude
9. Love

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Human-Rest of Nature Relationship:
• Nature is the whole of the physical world; it is also
what exists outside of any human action.

• Man is in nature but he acts upon it, thereby freeing

himself of it.

• He is part and apart of nature.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Example of Human-Rest of Nature
Relationship:
• An ecosystem = all the living organisms ( humans,
plants, animals, micro - organisms) + their physical
environment (soil , water , air , land) + the
interactions between them.

• Over-exploitation of natural resources can result in

damage to or the loss of entire ecosystems.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Role of work in its fulfillment:
• Environmental Protection is the practice of protecting
the natural environment by individuals, organisations
and governments.

• Its objectives are to conserve natural resources and

the existing natural environment and, where possible
to repair damage and reverse trends.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

• Everything humans have needed to survive,
and thrive (be in success),was provided by the
natural world around us: food, water,
medicine, materials for shelter and even
natural cycles such as climate and nutrients.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Important Questions:
Q1.What is the difference between animal consciousness and
human consciousness? How does the transformation take place
in a human being?
Q2. There are many problems manifest today at the level of
individual, family, society and the nature. Identify some of
these problems humans suffer from.
Q3. What is prosperity? Is it different from happiness?
Q4. What do the abbreviations given as SVDD, SSDD and SSSS
signify?
Q5. “Physical facilities are necessary and complete for animals,
while they are necessary but not complete for humans.” Comment.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Comprehensive Human Goal:

• In order to facilitate the fulfillment of the basic

aspirations of all human being in the society
and the comprehensive values that join these
human being together.

• The following human goals needs to be

understood.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

KOE 076/ Unit-I
• Right understanding is necessary for all
human beings. When one does not have the
right understanding, one remains disturb and
also acts in a manner so as to create
disharmony with other human being as well as
with rest of nature.
• Prosperity is needed in every family.
Prosperity in the family means that the family
is able to identify its need and is able to
produce/ achieve more than its requirements.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
• Trust in society means every member of
society feels related to everyone else and
therefore there is mistrust or fearlessness.

• Co-existence in nature means there is a

relationship and complementary among all the
units in nature including human beings.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Program needed to achieve the
Comprehensive Human Goal:
Five Dimensions of Human Order( Manaviya
Vyavstha ):
1. Education- Right living (Sikhsa- Sanskar)
2. Health – Self-regulation (Swasthya- Sanyam)
3. Justice – Preservation (Nyaya- Suraksha)
4. Production – Work ( Utpadan – Karya)
5. Exchange – Storage ( Vinimya – Kosh)
KOE 076/ Unit-I
1a. Education = To understand harmony at all four levels
= To understand the harmony right from self to the whole
existence
1b.Sanskar = To live in harmony at all four levels
= To live in harmony right from self to the whole existence
2a. Justice = Human- Human relation- its recognition, fulfillment,
evaluation- leading to mutual happiness.
2b. Preservation = Human- Rest of nature – its recognition, fulfillment,
evaluation- leading to mutual prosperity
= Enrichment, Protection, Right Utilization of nature. Ex: I
cultivate wheat: this is enrichment, I protect it so that it fit to eat:
this is protection; & I eat it (do not waste it) this is right utilization.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

3.Swasthya & Sanyam:
Sanyam: I take the responsibility of nurturing, protection & right utilization of
body.
1.Nurturing of the body ( POSAN)
• Ingestion (Grahan)
• Digestion (Pachan)
• Excretion (Nishkasan)
2.Protection of the body ( Sanraksahan)
• Proper upkeep (Vihar) of the body
• Labour (Shram)
• Physical Exercise (Vyayam)
• Asan ( Pranayam)
• Treatment (Upchar) of the body
3.Right utilization of the body (Sadupyog)
Swasthya: 1. The body is fit to act according to the self (I).
2. There is harmony among the various parts of the body.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
4.Production & Work:

• Production and work are for physical facilities ,

and this leads to a feeling of prosperity in the
family.

• Production is done in harmony with nature , and

hence , this also leads to co-existence with
nature.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

5a.Exchange = Exchange of produce for
mutual fulfillment ( not madness of profit)

5b. Storage = Storage of produce after

fulfillment of needs ( with a view of right
utilization in future)
KOE 076/ Unit-I
Need for Undivided Society:
• Undivided Society (Akhanda Samaja) - feeling
of being related to every human being.
• An undivided human centric society is one of
the higher human goals.
• Akhand Samaj is the state of the society where
all people of different religion and thought
process live together and work towards
betterment of the society.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Understanding the harmony in the
Society (Society being an extension of
family )
• Harmony in the family is the building block for
harmony in the society.

• Harmony in the society leads to an undivided

society (Akhand Samaj) when we feel related
with each other.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
Various Activities to form Undivided Society:

• Educating society through workshops,

seminars and street plays.

• Value education in educational institutions.

• Helping to apply values to the real world.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Educating society through
workshops, seminars ,street plays:
• The activity may be carried out by N.G.O.'s but must
receive the support of government organizations.
• These activities can be categorized into three types
which include :
• Knowing the self,
• Knowing the existence on basis of self,
• Knowing the definite human conduct which is
contribution of self in existence.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Value education in educational
institutions:
• Value education should be introduced in
current education system at all levels - primary
school, secondary school, senior secondary
school as well as college level.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Helping to apply values to the real world:
• Organizations - both government and non-
government should open up counseling centers
which can help their employees or general
public to apply values to real life situations.
• Realizing it at all levels starting from self
(with knowledge) to family (with meaningful
relationships), then to society (education -
health - production - business - services).
KOE 076/ Unit-I
Important Questions:
Q1. What do you mean by Sukh and Suvidha?
Q2. The needs of the body are quantitative. Illustrate.
Q3. What is pre-conditioning? What is their source?
Q4. What do you mean by right utilization of the body?
Q5.Why there is need of Undivided Society?

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Content
1:-Co-existence of the self and the body
2:-Activities of Self(I) & Body
3:-Needs of Self(I) & Body
4:-Need for Universal Human Order

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Co-existence of the self and the body:
• The human being is the co-existence of ‘I’ and
the body.
• There is a flow of information from ‘I’ to the
body and from body to the ‘I’.
• We can make this distinction between the self
and the body in three ways in terms of the
needs, activities and the types of these two
units.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

KOE 076/ Unit-I
Activities of Self(I) & Body:
• Activities that are going on in the self.
• Activities that are going on in the body.
• Activities involving both the self and the body.
• Recognizing and fulfilling are the activities
involving both the self and the body.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Activities of recognizing and fulfilling
in the body:
• Apart from the activities of Breathing, Heartbeat,
Digestion etc., the activities of the body can also be
understood as recognition and fulfillment.
• For example, when we are thirsty and drink water,
the body absorbs the water to the extent needed and
uses for the nourishment of the various organs.
Here, body recognizes its relation with water and
fulfills it.
• Recognizing > Fulfilling
KOE 076/ Unit-I
Activities of knowing, assuming,
recognizing and fulfilling in the self (‘I’):

• We assume – We all make assumptions and our

response (recognition and fulfillment) is dependent
on the assumption.

• For ex.: If I see a snake and assumed it to be a rope, I

shall respond differently to it, than if I take it to be a
snake itself. We call this activity ‘assuming or
manna’.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
• We recognize – We all recognize things today,
we recognize a variety of things. Like, we
recognize water, our parents, friends, etc. We
call this activity ‘recognizing or pahachanna’.
The recognizing in ‘I’ depends on assuming.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

• We fulfill –The response that follows
recognition is called the activity of ‘fulfilling
or nirvaaha karna’. The fulfillment depends on
the recognition. For ex.: Once we recognize
water, we take it.
• Assuming  > Recognizing  >  Fulfilling
• Knowing - Knowing means we have the right
understanding–the understanding of harmony
at all levels of our living.
• Knowing  > Recognizing  >  Fulfilling

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Activities of Desire, Thought and Expectation in the
self(I):

• Power: This means the basic capacity in the self

(‘I’). They are: desires, thoughts and expectations.

• Activities: The activities are: imaging, analyzing,

and selecting/tasting. The activity of analyzing
means breaking down the image into various parts
or to open it up. Selecting/tasting is with the
expectation of fulfilling our desires with the
expectation of happiness.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
KOE 076/ Unit-I
Needs of Self(I) & Body:

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Needs are ….
• The needs of the body like food for nourishment,
clothes for protection, and instruments to ensure
right utilization are called ‘physical facilities’
(suvidha) whereas the need of I is essentially to
live in a state of continuous happiness (sukh).
• The needs of the body are physical in nature,
whereas the needs of the self (‘I’) are not physical
in nature – like trust, respect, happiness etc.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Needs are fulfilled by….

• The need of the self (‘I’), for happiness (sukh)

is ensured by right understanding and right
feelings.
• The need of the body, for physical facilities
(suvidha), is ensured by appropriate physio-
chemical things.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Need for Universal Human Order:
• Universal human order (sarvabhauma
vyavastha) is a feeling of being related to
every unit including human beings and other
units of nature.

• Having understood the comprehensive human

goal, we are able to be in harmony not only
with human beings, but also with the rest of
the nature.
KOE 076/ Unit-I
• We are able to see that we are related to every
unit in nature and ensure mutual fulfillment
in that relationship.

• On the basis of understanding of harmony,

we get the notion of an undivided society and
universal human order.

KOE 076/ Unit-I

• The universal human order will comprise of:
1.The five dimensions of human endeavor
(education, health etc.) towards a fragmented
society.
2.The steps of organization from family to world
family, each anchored in right understanding
will integrated in the following way:
• Family=>familycluster =>village/
community =>village cluster =>world family

KOE 076/ Unit-I

Important Questions:

Q1. How have we differentiated people on the basis of body and

beliefs?
Q2. Difference between respect and differentiation.
Q3. Define harmony in nature.
Q4. Comment on the statement: “Nature is limited and space is
unlimited.”
Q5. Explain the concept of holistic perception of harmony in
existence.

Understanding Human Being

Human being is a co-existence of Self and Body

Self is consciousness. Its needs are feelings in consciousness (like happiness)

and these needs are fulfilled by activity of consciousness, i.e. Right
Understanding & Right Feeling
Body is material. Its needs are material (like food) and these needs are fulfilled
by material, i.e. Physio chemical things

The needs of consciousness can not be fulfilled by material.

The needs of material can not be fulfilled by consciousness.

The recognition & fulfillment of the body is definite

The recognition & fulfillment in the self is on the basis of knowing,
assuming
 If the assumption is based on knowing, the assumption is right and
the recognition & fulfillment is correct  definite conduct
 If the assumption is without knowing, the assumption may or may
not be right , so the recognition & fulfillment is uncertain  indefinite
Some Prevailing Notions of Happiness

Owning / accumulating physical facility

For human being, physical facility is required, but it alone does not suffice for
human being

Pleasure (from favourable sensation)

Sound, Touch, Form, Taste, Smell – Through the Body
Tasty-Necessary  Tasty-Unnecessary  Tasteless-Unnecessary 
Intolerable

Attention, appreciation… (favourable feelings) from others

Dependence on the other, can’t be continuous

Sometimes “happiness”, excitement…

Sometimes “unhappiness”, depression…
Happiness Continuity of Happiness
The state or situation, in which I live,
State / Situation in which I live
if there is harmony / synergy in it, or expanse of my being:
then it is Naturally Acceptable to me to be in 1. As an Individual Human Being
that state / situation
2. As a member of a Family
To be in a state / situation which is Naturally 3. As a member of Society
Acceptable is Happiness
4. As an unit in Nature/Existence

To be in a state of Harmony / Synergy is

Happiness
Continuity of Happiness
= Harmony at all levels of
Happiness = To be in Harmony being i.e.
5. Harmony in the Human Being
6. Harmony in the Family
7. Harmony in the Society
8. Harmony in Nature/Existence
Family

Is relationship Important?
Really? Then why do we stop talking with the other for days and weeks?
So is ego more important than relationship?

We do want to live in relationship but as long as we consider human

being to be body, it is not possible to understand relationship.

Without understanding relationship, it is not possible to fulfill

relationship, even though we do want to.
i.e. if we are trying to assume relationship on the basis of body and
trying to fulfill relationship on the basis of body,  it does not work,
in spite of all good intentions.
Family

The family is the next larger order – it is the basic unit or building block
of human organisation

In the family, there are parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, children,

old people, uncles, aunts, cousins; and so many relatives and friends…

Our basic grooming for living in relationship begins in the family

The major issue in family is that of relationship

To live in relationship, it is essential to understand relationship

Without understanding relationship, isn’t possible to fulfil relationship…

e.g. Not speaking to each other… for days… opposition, divorce…

i.e. if we are trying to assume relationship on the basis of body and

trying to fulfill relationship on the basis of body, it does not work, in
spite of all good intentions.

Nature

1. Physical order – soil, metals etc.

2. Plant order– trees, plants etc. Nature = Collection of Units
3. Animal order – animals, birds etc. = 4 Orders
4. Human order – human beings

There is a relationship of mutual fulfilment amongst these 4 orders. So far, the first
3 orders are mutually fulfilling for each other as well as for human beings

It is naturally acceptable to human beings to be fulfilling for these 3 orders. Human

beings need to understand this mutual fulfilment; only with this understanding
will human beings be able to live with mutual fulfilment

The role of Human Being is to realize this mutual fulfillment – For this, all that
human beings need to do is:
1. To understand that mutual fulfilment is inherent in nature – we do not
have to create it
2. To live accordingly – then the mutual fulfilment amongst the 4 orders will be
realised (and there is provision in nature for living in a mutually fulfilling
manner)
Human Being

Human Being is co-existence of Self and Body

The Self is central to human existence

The Body is used as an instrument by the Self

The need of the Self is continuous happiness. For this, the program of
the Self is:
at all levels of being
To understand harmony & 1. As an individual human being
To live in harmony 2. As a member of the family
3. As a member of society
4. As an unit in nature/existence

Physical facility is required only for the nurturing, protection and right
utilisation of the body.
