Three Dimensional Force System (Engineering Mechanics)

The document discusses three dimensional force systems. It defines mechanics as dealing with the effects of forces on objects, dividing it into statics which concerns equilibrium and dynamics which concerns motion. It notes that many mechanical problems require three dimensional analysis, where a force can be resolved into three mutually perpendicular components Fx, Fy, and Fz. Equilibrium in three dimensions requires the sums of the forces along each axis to be zero, and no net translation. The document provides an example problem to determine the magnitude and direction angles of a resultant force from three dimensional force components.

EngineeringMechanics:

Mechanics is the physical science which deals with the effects of forces on objects. The subject
of mechanics is logically divided into two parts :
S t a t i c s : concerns with the equilibrium of bodies under the action of forces.
D y n a m i c s : concerns with the motion of bodies.
Many problems in mechanics require analysis in three dimensions, and for such
problems it is often necessary to resolve a force into three mutually
perpendicular components. The force F acting at point O in Fig. 2/16 has the
rectangular components Fx, Fy, Fz, .

Equilibrium in 2D:
F = 0 (no translation)

Equilibrium in 3D: x
2D
F = 0 (no translation)

F x 0  F =0
y F z 0
