Music is an expression of feelings and
emotions.
The meaning of music is conveyed to
the listener through creative
expression.
This lesson will discuss
two important expressive
elements of music:
tempo and dynamics
Tempo is the speed of music.
It refers to the fastness or
slowness of music.
For every piece of music there is
an appropriate tempo that conveys or
expresses the meaning of the music
effectively.
Italian terms are used to name the different tempo
markings. They are as follows:

Largo - very , very slow


Lento - very slow
Adagio - slow
Andante - walking pace, flowing
Moderato - moderate
Italian terms are used to name the different tempo
markings. They are as follows:

Allegreto - rapid, fast


Vivace - quick
Pesto - very fast
ritardando - gradually becoming slow
accelerando - gradually becoming fast
Another expressive element of music is the
volume of music. Our radios have a knob to

increase or decrease the volume of the sound.
Certainly, music has to have an appropriate
degree of loudness or softness to make it more
interesting, soothing and enjoyable to listen to.
Dynamics is the loudness and softness of music. It refers
to the volume of music.

Piano - p - soft
Pianissimo - pp - very soft
mezzo piano - mp - medium soft
mezzo forte - mf - medium loud
Dynamics is the loudness and softness of music. It refers

Forte - f - loud
Fortessimo - ff - very loud
crescendo - - gradually becoming loud

decrescendo - - gradually becoming soft
