RESEARCH Definition

This document defines research and discusses its purposes and types. Research is defined as a systematic, rigorous, and empirical method of acquiring knowledge using controlled and transparent methods. The main purposes of research are exploratory/formative research to form questions, descriptive research to present details of a population or phenomenon, and explanatory research to identify reasons for what occurs. Research has key characteristics of being systematic, empirical, critical, valid, verifiable, and transparent. The main types of research are qualitative research, which explores experiences through interviews, and quantitative research, which generates statistics through surveys.

Defining its meaning,

purposes, characteristics and
types
Definitions of Research
Research is a method of acquiring knowledge based on
the scientific method.

Polit and Beck (2001) stated that research is a systematic

inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions
or solve problems.

Palispis (2001) cited that research is carried out for a

specific purpose to answer specific questions to solve a
particular problem or issue.
Burns & Grove (2007) said that research is to search or examine
again and again or carefully.

Parel (1973) defined research as a systematic investigation or

something in order to answer questions posed by the researcher.

Coleman & Briggs (2002) defined research as both critical and

self-critical inquiry aimed at contributing towards the
advancement of knowledge and wisdom.

Sanchez (2002) defined research as a discovery and exploration

of the unknown.
The purpose of research is stated
clearly and explicitly in a format
appropriate for the style of
investigation. The purpose of research
indicates the focus and direction of
the research (Denscombe, 2002).

Purposes of Exploratory/Formulative Research

Research Descriptive Research

Explanatory Research
The researchers goal is to
formulate more precise questions
that future research can answer.
Exploratory research helps
ensure that a more rigorous, Exploratory/
more conclusive future study Formulative
will not begin with an Research

such as interviews or focus groups.

It attempts to get an in-depth opinion from participants.

Fewer people take part in this research, but the contact with
these people tends to last longer.

This research generates statistics through the use
of large-scale survey research, using methods
such as questionnaires or structured interviews.

Quantitative research makes you focus your

mind on specific things by means of statistics
