A. Characteristics of New Music
What Is Music?
Sounds are all around us, from birds chirping and waves lapping against a coastline to
cars honking in traffic. But sometimes sounds are put together in purposeful ways to
create a specific atmosphere or to express ideas or emotions. Such organized sounds are
called music.
Music is a collection of coordinated sound or sounds. Making music is the process
of putting sounds and tones in an order, often combining them to create a unified
composition. People who make music creatively organize sounds for a desired result, like
a Beethoven symphony or one of Duke Ellington's jazz songs. Music is made of sounds,
vibrations, and silent moments, and it doesn't always have to be pleasant or pretty. It can
be used to convey a whole range of experiences, environments, and emotions.

B. Introduce the Different New Music
When we are talking about the term “new music,” it’s
not literally means as “modern music;” it is the use of
new styles and techniques in music incorporating
various music, such as ethnic and electronic music,
and other forms of music. New music composers have
different approaches in composing music but are not
limited to the usual or common methods.

OSB
Through his life’s work, Fr. Manuel P. Maramba, OSB, brought
the music of the Catholic Church closer to the hearts of the Filipino

The Benedictine monk, who died July 13 at 84 after a battle
with pancreatic cancer, was a prolific composer who leaves behind a
large body of sacred music that includes the Mass, symphonic works,

“Father Maramba played an important role in the translation of
the music text of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours to Filipino,
after extensive research on Filipino culture, values and traditions,”
says associate professor Maria Alexandra Chua, Ph.D, of the
University of Santo Tomas (UST) Conservatory of Music, where
Maramba also taught composition and theory.
“He was a child prodigy and musical genius,” adds Chua. “He
was a concert pianist, organist, theorist and composer, an advocate of
atonality who also brought in Philippine musical forms and structures
