PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS

• Philosophy can be defined as the fundamental nature of

knowledge, reality and existence. In the case of education,
philosophy is what one believes to be true about the essentials of
education. When thinking about your philosophy of education,
consider your beliefs about the roles of schools, teachers,
learners, families, and communities.
Four Key Educational Philosophies

Perennialism Essentialism Progressivism Reconstructionism

Essentialism
1- Educational philosophy that suggests that there are skills and knowledge that all
people should possess.

2- Focus on teaching a common core of knowledge, including basic literacy and

morality. Believes schools should not try to change society but need to transmit
essential understandings.
Progressivism
1- Educational philosophy highlighting real-world
problem solving and individual development, with
the teacher serving as a guide on the side.

2- Focus on the whole child as the experimenter

and independent thinker. Believes active
experience leads to questioning and problem
solving. Approaches textbooks as tools instead of
authoritarian sources of knowledge
3- Progressivism is grounded in the work of John Dewey
Reconstructionism
1- Educational philosophy asserting that schools, teachers, and students
should take the lead in addressing social problems and improving society.

2- Reconstructionists feel that schooling should be used to eliminate social

inequities to create a more just society.

3- Focus on developing important social questions by critically examining

society. Recognizes influence of social, economic, and political systems.
Believes schools can lead to collaborative change to develop a better
society and enhance social justice.
4-Reconstructionism is grounded in the work of Paulo Freire

• Paulo Freire, a Brazilian philosopher and educator, was

one of the most influential thinkers behind
reconstructionism.

• He complained the banking model of education in his

best-known writing, Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

• Banking models of education view students as empty

vessels to be filled by the teacher’s expertise, like a
teacher putting “coins” of information into the students’
Instead,
• Freire supported problem-posing models of education that
recognized the prior knowledge everyone has and can
share with others.
Historical Foundation

What is the importance of history of education?

History of Education will help you to understand how the past events
shaped the present education systems, theories and related phenomenon
in the area of teacher education in particular and education in general.
Historical Foundations
It includes
1.Role of curriculum in achievements of nations.
2.Guides future plans
3.Factors that influence development of nation e.g.
unity
4.Eliminates the useless traditions.
Role of the History of curriculum in the development of curriculum

1- History of the curriculum plays a very important role in the development of the
nation. It takes long and tedious time to formulate a good curriculum which represents
the need of the society and the experiences of the past.

2- The history of the curriculum tell the curriculum planner how to develop and modify
the curriculum, what to teach and what should be the core material of the subjects,
what objectives they want to achieve through the curriculum.

3-The history of the curriculum also explains the teacher psychology at different time
and how to improve their teaching styles. The history also provides a detail about the
learner behavior at different times. It also provides information about the psychology of
the students, how they learn and what they want to learn.
4- Today majority of the develop countries are those countries who have a long history o
freedom and proper education system. They achieved their successes through education
and implementation of time needed curriculum. They modified their curriculum according
to the need of time.

5- Some of newly born countries also achieved that status because they adapted
successful model of other developed countries and modified according to their own needs
and culture.
The history of the curriculum guides the future plans

The history of the curriculum guides the future plans because curriculum
is always based on the future demands of the country and the lesson
learned through history, tell the curriculum developer not to repeat the
mistake of the past and develop a curriculum which is based on the
future need of the society and international demands. History is the
profile of past successes and failures.
History helps in the eliminations of useless
traditions

The history of education tells the curriculum developer what

not to include in the curriculum. What of lessons can bring no
good to the curriculum and what type of contents material are
good for the teaching learning process, so history of the
curriculum eliminate all those useless traditions from the
modern curriculum and help the developer to incorporate what
is needed for the curriculum.
