Linear Time Invariant System

This document defines and classifies linear time invariant (LTI) systems. It explains that a system converts an input signal to an output signal and can be represented as filtering, modulation, or physical devices like transmitters or receivers. An LTI system is both linear, meaning the superposition and homogeneity properties hold, and time-invariant, meaning a time-shifted input results in an equal time-shifted output. Procedures are provided to determine if a system is time-invariant or time-varying by comparing outputs for different inputs. The document concludes by asking the reader to determine if a given equation represents a linear system and provides references for further information.

System

System can be defined as a process of converting input signal to a new form of signal.
System can be represented in different forms such as filtering, modulation, etc. Physically,
system can be a transmitter, canal, receiver, etc.

Linear
Superposition : Assume a system is supplied then the output will be , and the output will be if
is given as the input.

Homogeneity: Assume a system is supplied then the output will be , and the output will be if
is given as the input, whereas is a constant.

Time-Invariant System

When a system is given , then the output will be . This system should meet the following rule to
be a time-invariant
𝑥 (𝑡 − 𝑡 0 ) → 𝑦 (𝑡 − 𝑡0 )
To put it differently, a system is considered time-invariant if the output signal shifted equally
according to input signal.

Classification of Systems
Time-Invariant System

Following are the procedures to determine whether a system is time-invariant or time-varying :

• Assume is the output of
• Define the second input as and find out
• Find out then compare with
• Assume then the system is considered time-invariant, otherwise it is time-varying
