Material Study

This document discusses the use of mycelium as a building material. Some key points: 1) Mycelium is the root structure of fungi that can be processed into building materials. It is strong yet lightweight and provides insulation and fire resistance. 2) Mycelium is being used to make bricks, insulation, and other construction materials. The first mycelium building was erected in 2014. 3) Mycelium bricks are "grown" by mixing mycelium with materials like corn husks in molds. The result is a solid yet lightweight brick. Mycelium's unique ability to merge with other materials allows its use in structures.

BUILDING MATERIALS AND
CONSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION
• Mushroom is the next most promising technology that
shall reduce our ecological footprint and lead the way into
a sustainable world.

• Mycelium is a root-like structure of a fungus consisting of

a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae.

• Mycelium is mainly composed of natural polymers such as

chitin, cellulose, proteins, etc, so it is a natural polymeric
composite fibrous material.
USES
• Used to make building materials fire-resistant, stronger, and
lighter.
• Used in the fashion industry to mimic the look, texture, and
utility of leather.
• Used as a bonding agent for building materials, such as brick.
• Used as packaging material, art installations, and other products
at a smaller scale.
CHARACTERISTICS
• Superior resistance to flaming combustion.
• Natural materials found in the environment and the species used have no toxic
effects.
• Provides good insulating, acoustic, and fire performance.
• Mycelium is stronger than concrete relative to its weight.
• The material does not emit any volatile organic compounds.
• They are viable low-cost and environmentally sustainable alternatives to
conventional commercial building insulation materials.
01.
Grows around other organic materials such as straw and
when dried and processed can be turned into a building
MYCELIUM BRICKS material of any specific shape or form.

02.
Has wider applications and is only taking baby steps in
the construction world.

03.
It is "grown" by mixing together chopped-up corn husks
with mycelium. The mixture is then put into a brick
mold and left to grow for five days. The result is a brick
that is solid, but lightweight.
USES OF MYCELIUM BRICKS
FIRST MYCELIUM BUILDING
• In 2014, a group called ‘The Living’ erected the first
mycelium brick tower. The benefits of large-scale
applications would be countless.

• The Living poured blocks into formwork that then

joined together through bio-welding in “Living
Bricks,” which was on display at the Centre
Pompidou's 2019 exhibition La Fabrique du Vivant.
SHELL MYCELIUM
KERALA,
• As an alternative INDIA
construction
material that is particularly suitable
for building temporary structures,
thanks to its environmentally-
friendly properties.

• The unique characteristic of the material is that can merge

with the framework to which it is added.
• In the case of the Shell Mycelium pavilion, the material
became combined with a triangulated timber framework.
IMPORTANCE OF MYCELIUM IN
ARCHITECTURE
• In addition to improving the structure's aesthetics, mycelium also helps to
conserve resources, lower resource utilization, and lower carbon footprints.
