Sequence One – The Lab
Q4: The sound created in this shot gives the audience a jump scare. Alarms blaring and the sudden open of the door,
and also the scientist running away with heavy hits on the floor. The connotations of the alarms blaring suggests that
there is danger and panic inside the facility, suggesting something has gone wrong.
Q5: A fast paced editing creates a rushed feel to which the audience is trying to figure out what is going on the scientist
is running away trying to get away from something so it makes it seem more frantic and desperate.
Q6:Long shot, the connotations of this shot suggest that there is something chasing him behind him.
Sequence One – The Lab
Q7: The mise en scene in this shot suggests that he is afraid and panicking and wanting to get to safety. The makeup
helps us show this because we can see he sweating profusely from running away and being scared. Also, the acting
helps sell him being afraid to the audience by the heaving breathing and frantically pressing the elevator button
Q8: An editing technique that helps us experience the same events the scientist is having is with the Eyeline Match shot,
this gives us a POV of what he is seeing and makes us feel aware of the surroundings.
Q9: The mise en scene suggests this man is a scientist with the costume design. He is wearing a white lab coat, a smart
shirt and tie, and supposedly an ID badge around his neck
Sequence Two – Will Disappears
Q1: I would describe this shot with Low Key lighting in it.
Q2: The effect of this lighting design makes us feel scared for Will and gives a very horror theme to the scene.
Q3: A non-diegetic sound that can be heard is the dog barking in off screen. The connotations of this suggest that the
dog can sense some sort of danger approaching the house.
Sequence Two – Will Disappears
Q5: The purpose of this is to puts us in to the shoes of Will and makes us feel as if we are there, which in turn make us
feel scared/afraid.
Q6: Low angle shot, the meaning of this implies that Will is powerless against whoever is trying to break into the home.
Sequence Two – Will Disappears
Q7: The connotations of the phone dial tone sound effect is to suggest that no help is coming to help him and that he is
alone to fight for himself.
Q8: A reason the extreme long shot was used was to give a sense of where Will is which is in the middle of nowhere,
another reason that no one is coming to help him.
Q9: In this shot we see will frantically loading a magazine and trying to put them in as fast as he can even though he is
shaking so much. The connotations of this suggest that he is afraid of what ever is chasing him because he knows he is
in danger.
Sequence Two – Will Disappears
Q10: A reason the Duffer brothers decided to use a close up shot is to show how afraid Will is with his face and how he
is shaking through his body to the point of not even being able to hold a gun properly.
Q11: A reason they decided to use a high angle shot here is to show that whatever is chasing him is stronger than him
but also to show how afraid Will is.
Q12: The shots at the end showcase that Will is now gone, meaning he has been kidnapped by whatever was chasing
him.
Sequence Three – Hopper Gets Ready
Q1: The mise en scene suggest that whoever lives here is a slob who doesn’t care what is happening around the house.
The props of the empty can of beers gives connotations of him being a drunkard.
Q2: Lighting used in this scene can be described as high key lighting
Q3: This communicates to the viewer that it is now daytime and the night when Will was kidnapped has now passed
onto a the next day.
Sequence Three – Hopper Gets Ready
Q4: A use of mise en scene that helps communicate about information about the character is with the use of the pills on
the table. This suggests that the man is ill in someway as we don’t know what he uses the pills for.
Q5: We learn from this shot that he is living next to a river/lake and smokes cigarettes.
Q8: The significance of seeing a montage of him putting on his costume suggests that he is important figure within his
work and what he does. From this we see he is police officer and a chief of the police force from his badge.
Q9: An enigma that stays in the first episode of the show is that we don’t understand why he drinks so much, until later
on in the episode we figure out why.
Sequence Four – Back at the Lab
Q1: The mise en scene of this shot communicates to the audience that these people are important people from the
expensive suits and cars. Also the way they talked at the start suggest that the person ‘Dr. Brenner’ is very important in
terms of plot as his name was the first line of them talking.
Q3: The purpose of the editing technique is to showcase how powerful and prepared they are for whatever they are
doing.
Sequence Four – Back at the Lab
Q4: I would describe the shots in sound design terms as ominous and disturbing as we hear something but its too far
away to make out what it is. The elevator sounds were loud and clunky making it give off a feel of wariness to the
