Advice to students – for preparation time

• Use the time well – get organised!

• If you are online, print the text (HL)

• Highlight details of the text

• Map out your presentation

• Do not over-rehearse
Advice to students – for Part 1 (HL)
• Stay focused on the extract

• Briefly give context and overview of the extract

• Comment on details of the extract

• Make observations and give opinions on


characters, plot, themes/ideas, author’s aims
and techniques

• Include quotations
Advice to students – for Part 2
• Listen carefully to the questions …
• … and give thoughtful answers

• Be ready to give your ideas, opinions and


interpretations, and to justify them

• Develop your answers – not just short and simple

• But don’t try to make another presentation!


Advice to students – for Part 3
• Parts 1 and 2 are finished – it’s a new theme now, so forget
the extract.
• Continue to develop your answers well

• Take the initiative sometimes


• Relate your comments to things done or discussed in
class, or in other IB subjects, or in your personal lives
• Give examples, short anecdotes

• But don’t ask the teacher questions!


• That’s not what “attempts to engage the interlocutor” means!
