What is the full form of IT?

IT Infrastructure
Information technology infrastructure is defined as
set of information technology (IT) components that
are the foundation of an IT service; typically
components (computer and networking hardware
and facilities), but also various software and
network components.
Network Technologies
Network technology is any technology by which
two or more computer systems are connected and
communicate information between them.

Objectives
1. Describe through a diagram how networking and
internet works
2. Identify the classification of a given network
based on coverage and availability using given
examples.
How does the internet work?
Pedro is a member of public relations team of a student organization.
He is tasked to promote it to the student body as well as to other
schools and organizations. Instead of printing brochures, the team
suggested that he utilize the Internet and come up with a Web site.
Since it is first time the organization will be dealing with this
technology, the plan will be presented to the officers and members
during the monthly meeting. Pedro is required to present to the team
how to use the Internet and the prerequisites needed in order to do so.
If you were Pedro, how will you make your presentation? How will
you explain the Internet?
Activity 1
Prepare ½ crosswise clean yellow pad paper, on the
front side of your paper, create a diagram that
shows how you think the Internet works based on
your experience and understanding.
Your ideas may differ from one another.
Activity 1

At this point, divide the class depending on the total


population with at least 5 members each. Present
your diagram to the other members. They shall do
the same.
Activity 1
At the back portion of your ½ yellow pad paper. Each member should
be able to answer the following questions in presenting his or her
ideas:

1. What for you is the Internet? Why did you diagram it this way?
2. What are the components found in the diagram?
3. What is the purpose of each component?
4. What are needed to make each component work?
5. What is the relationship between the components?
Activity 1
Make sure that you listen carefully and find out if
your ideas are similar or different from your group
mates’. Afterward, the group should be able to
create another diagram that will combine all ideas
of the members on how the Internet works. Present
the revised diagram to the class.
The nature of the Internet
You have presented and exchange ideas regarding
how the internet works. Next, you will learn
concepts essential to the use of the Internet and the
different requirements necessary for you to access
the Internet.
Network
A network is created by connecting two or more computers using
cables or wireless devices. A device such as printer may also be part
of the network.

The common medium used to connect computers is the Ethernet
cable.

It is connected to the network adapter (Network Interface


Card or NIC) of each computer. The Ethernet cable is
commonly known as the Local Area Network (LAN) cable
while the network adapter is the LAN Card.

The network adapter may be a separate card inserted in one of the
expansion slots of the computer’s motherboard or it could be built in.

An additional device such as a hub or switch is required to
connect three or more computers.

You will need a crossover Ethernet cable to connect two
computers directly while computers connected through a
hub, switch, router would require a straight Ethernet
cable.

Aside from serving as the central connection of the
network, the hub is basically a repeater that makes
sure that the signal in the Ethernet cable is
maintained over long distances. However, switches
are more popular nowadays because of their ability
to direct traffic over the network. This is not made
possible by the hub.
Protocol
For computer or devices to successfully
communicate with each other, a set of rules or
standards is followed. Such is called a protocol.
Simply put, it is a set of rules on how to format and
read data.
