Evaluating Polynomial Functions

1. The document provides examples of evaluating polynomial expressions and functions at given values of x. 2. It shows how to substitute values into polynomial expressions and functions and simplify them by distributing exponents and combining like terms. 3. The examples evaluate polynomials at values like x=2, x=-3, and f(x+1) to demonstrate finding the value of a polynomial expression or function at a specific input.

EVALUATING POLYNOMIAL

EXPRESSION AND
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION
-finding the value at a given value of x
Examples :
1. Evaluate the given polynomial
expression -2x4 + 3x2 – 2x + 5 when x = 2
Solutions :
-2x4 + 3x2 – 2x + 5
= -2 (2)4 + 3( 2) 2 – 2( 2) + 5
= -2 ( 16) + 3(4) – 4 + 5
= - 32 + 12 + 1
2. Evaluate the polynomial function :
f(x) = x + x -7x -3 for f(2)
3 2

f(x) = x3 + x2 – 7x – 3
f(2) = 23 + 22 – 7(2) – 3
= 8 + 4 – 14 – 3
f(2) = -5

3. Find Q(-3) for Q(x) = 2x + x -18x + 7
3 2

Q(x) = 2x3 + x2 – 18x + 7

Q(-3) = 2 ( -3) + (-3) – 18 (-3) + 7
3 2

= 2 (-27) + 9 + 54 + 7
= -54 + 9 + 54 + 7
Q(-3) = 16
4. Find f(x+2) in the function f(x) = 4x – 2
f( x) = 4x – 2
f( x+2) = 4 ( x+2) – 2
= 4x + 8 – 2
= 4x + 6 simplify
f ( x+2) = 2 (2x+ 3)
5. Evaluate f(x) = 2x3 – 3x2 + 4 when f ( x+1)
f ( x+1) = 2x3 – 3x2 + 4
f ( x+1) = 2( x+1)3 – 3( x+1)2 + 4
= 2[( x2 + 2x + 1)(x + 1)] – 3 ( x2+ 2x + 1) + 4
= 2( x3 + 3x2 + 3x + 1) – 3x2 -6x -3 + 4
= 2x3 + 6x2 + 6x + 2 – 3x2 – 6x -3 + 4
f ( x+1) = 2x3 + 3x2 + 3
