1.0 Introduction To Construction Materials and Testing

This document provides an introduction to materials testing for construction projects. It discusses that materials testing measures the characteristics and behavior of materials like metals, concrete and plastics under various conditions. The results can be used to determine a material's suitability for applications like buildings, machinery and packaging. Materials testing includes mechanical, thermal, electrical, corrosion resistance and non-destructive testing. Standard test methods are established by organizations like ISO and ASTM. Common construction materials include aggregates, steel reinforcement, cement, concrete and bitumen. Various tests are carried out on these materials to determine their properties.

MATERIALS TESTING

It is a measurement of the characteristics and behavior of materials such as metals,

concrete, ceramics or plastics under various conditions.
The data obtained can be used in specifying the suitability of materials for various
applications. (e.g. building or aircraft construction, machinery and packaging etc.)

It is breakdown to 5 major categories:

• Mechanical testing
• Testing for thermal properties
• Testing for electrical properties
• Testing for resistance to corrosion, radiation and biological deterioration
• Non-destructive testing
MATERIALS TESTING

National and International bodies such as International Organization for Standardization

(ISO) with headquarters in Geneva and the American Society for Testing Materials
(ASTM) established these standard test methods.
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

An item, material or supply consumed or used in a construction project and incorporated

in the constructed building or structure.

There are 5 types of construction material, namely:

• Aggregates
• Steel reinforcement
• Cement
• Concrete
• Bitumen
