Direct Variation

Learning Purposes:
At the end of the lesson this week, the students must be able to:

 Identify related quantities in real life situations

 Identify the basic concepts in Direct/Direct Square Variations.
 Translate statements involving Direct/Direct Square Variations.
 Solve problems involving Direct/Direct Square Variations.
 Sometimes changes in the values of two variable
quantities can be related. When a change in the value
of one quantity corresponds to a predictable change
in the value of the other quantity, then we say that the
two quantities are related. So, which of the following
quantities are related?

Number of hours spend

on social media and Nature of Activity
number of friends Socio economic
and Heart beat/rate
status and IQ

A car travels at a constant speed of 60 km Distance

per hour. How far can it travel in : a.) half (km)
an hour; b.) 2 hrs?; c.) 3 hrs?; 4 hrs? S = d/t 60 60 60 60 60

Observation: The relationship bet. Time and distance in this

examples is expressed by the equation d = 60t. The
As the time increases, the distance also
increases. / As the time decreases, the
equation is called a Direct Variation. We say that
distance also decreases. distance varies directly as time. Since the distance
traveled depends on the length of time the car is

Direct Variation:
Let x and y denote two quantities. “ y varies directly with x” or “y is
directly proportional to x, if there is nonzero number k such that:

The number k is called the constant of proportionality or the constant of

variation.
EXAMPLE #1:
Student Assistants at HTC are paid 30 pesos per hour.

a.) Identify the 2 quantities. (Independent/Dependent Variable)

EXAMPLE #2:

The weight of an object on the moon varies directly as its weight on

Earth. An astronaut who weighs 80 kg on Earth weighs 12 kg on the
moon. How much would a 60 kg person weigh on the moon?

EXAMPLE #3:
The pressure of water on an object varies directly with its distance from the
surface. A submarine experiences a pressure of 26 lbs per square inch at 60
feet below the surface. How much pressure will the submarine experience at
208 feet below the surface?

EXAMPLE #4:

The distance a spring will stretch varies directly with the force applied
to it. Suppose a spring stretches by 40 cm when 65 kg force is applied
to it. Find the equation of variation.

Given: Find k. Find equation
