Characteristics of Stars

Stars come from huge clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. A star's color indicates its surface temperature - blue stars are hottest, and red stars are coolest. A star's apparent brightness depends on both its actual luminosity and its distance from Earth. In general, more massive stars are hotter on their surfaces.

Learning Competency:
 Infer the characteristics of stars based on the
characteristics of the Sun. S9ES-IIIg-32

Learning Objectives:
Determine the different characteristics of stars.
Described the relationship between the color of the star and its
temperature.
Review:
What can we find in the solar system?
What are the planets of the solar system?
Which is the largest planet?
Which is the smallest one?
Which is the brightest planet?

What object shines bright like a diamond aside from the

brightest planet?
Everybody Guessing!

Direction: Flash in the screen are lyrics of popular songs

that you are familiar about and you are going to guess the
title of the song.
1.“What if we rewrite the stars? Say you
were made to be mine, nothing could keep
us apart you’d be the one I was meant to
find. It’s up to you, and it’s up to me. No
one can say what we get to be. So why
don’t we rewrite the stars?”

“Rewrite the Stars”

2. “Lately, I’ve been, I’ve been losing
sleep. Dreaming about the things that
we could be. But baby, I’ve been, I’ve
been praying hard. Said, “no more
counting dollars, we’ll be counting
stars”.

“Counting Stars”
3. “Cause you’re a sky, cause you’re a
sky full of stars. I’m gonna give you my
heart. Cause you’re a sky full of stars.
Cause you light up the path.”

up and touch the sky. Can’t stop cause
we’re so high let’s do this one more
time.”

5. “Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I
wonder what you are? Up above the
world so high, like a diamond in the
sky.”

OF
STARS
WHAT ARE STARS?
- Is a natural luminous
body visible in the sky
especially at night.

- It is a huge sphere of hot

glowing gas.
There are approximately 400 billion stars in our galaxy and
there are about 170 million of galaxies.
Sun is a Star. It is a huge, glowing sphere of gas.
Sun is a 4.5 billion years old yellow dwarf star.

BRIGHTNESS
BRIGHTNESS
A star’s apparent brightness, is the brightness you see from
Earth.
A star absolute brightness is the brightness the star would
have if all stars were the same distance from the Earth.
COLOR & TEMPERATURE

Star color ranges from red to blue. The color of the stars
indicates its surface temperature.
SIZE

Is the total amount of material in a body.

SIZE

Giant Star
MASS
- mass is the measure of the amount of material
in a body.
MASS
SUMMARY:
Scientist believe that all stars came from a huge cloud of gas and
dust called nebulae.
The color of the star indicates its surface temperature. Blue is
color is the color of the hottest star.
The brightness of a star as observed from the earth relies upon
two variables distance and the actual brightness (absolute
brightness) of the star.
In general the more massive a star is the hotter its surface.
