General Chemistry I.COMBINEDGASLAW

The combined gas law combines Boyle's law, Charles' law, and Gay-Lussac's law. It states that the ratio of the product of pressure and volume to the absolute temperature of a gas is equal to a constant. The combined gas law can be used to predict how changing one variable such as pressure, volume, or temperature will affect the other variables as long as the amount of gas remains constant. Some examples of how it applies include tire pressure changing with temperature, scuba diving, and refrigeration systems.

Introduction
-The combined gas law combines the
three gas laws: Boyle's Law, Charles’s Law,
and Gay-Lussac's Law. It states that the
ratio of the product
of pressure and volume and the absolute
temperature of a gas is equal to a constant. 2

Combined Gas Law:

-Essentially, the law states that the ratio

between pressure, volume, and absolute
temperature of a gas equals some constant.
So, if you change one of these variables, you
can predict how the other factors are affected.

Real Life Applications:
-In a car, the amount of gas remains
constant, but when driving down the road,
the temperature of the tire and gas
increases and so does the volume of the
tire. Tire companies take all of these into
account when creating a tire. 7
Real Life Applications:
-While scuba diving theories sure become more
and more as you go deeper. If the diver ascends
with full lungs on a warm day, both the
temperature and pressure decrease and the
volume of the air will increase rapidly. The diver
has to exhale as he ascends to prevent lung

damage.
Real Life Applications:

-Combined gas law is most

commonly used or seen in
machines with a gas or some
type of fuel. 9
Real Life Applications:
-The modern refrigerator takes advantage of the gas laws to
remove heat from a system. Compressed gas in the coils is
allowed to expand. This expansion lowers the temperature of the
gas and transfers heat energy from the material in the refrigerator
to the gas. As the gas is pumped through the coils, the pressure
on the gas compresses it and raises the gas temperature. This
heat is then dissipated through the coils into the outside air. As
the compressed gas is pumped through the system again, the 10
