Tarcha Polytechnic College: Short Term Training On Autocad Software

This document provides an overview of AutoCAD software and a short training course on it. It discusses AutoCAD's history and development, its use as a 2D and 3D CAD tool, different versions released over time, its features and interface, and how to perform basic functions like inserting points and measuring angles. The training aims to help construction management professionals learn AutoCAD and uses screenshots to illustrate the program's menus, toolbars and user coordinate system.

Short Term Training on AutoCAD

Software
Target Groups: Level V Construction Management

By Eng.Kebede.H (MSc,PE)
AutoCAD Generalities
• Design software developed by
AutoDesk.
• First released in 1982 under the
name ‘MicroCAD’.
• Revolutionary drafting and design
tool.
Introduction

• AutoCAD is a CAD (Computer Aided Design

or
Computer Aided Drafting) software application
for 2D and 3D design and drafting.
• In earlier releases, AutoCAD used primitive
entities such as lines, polylines, circles, arcs, and
text as the foundation for more complex objects.
Introduction Cont’d…

• Modern AutoCAD includes a full set of

basic solid modeling and 3D tools.
• With the release of AutoCAD 2007 came
improved 3D modeling functionality, which
meant better navigation when working in
3D. Moreover, it became easier to edit 3D
models.
Versions of AutoCAD

• The first version AutoCAD-1.0 was launched

back in the year 1982.
• The software was considered to be the first
program of its own type and has unique
features .
• Since then, Autodesk had launched various
upgraded versions of AutoCAD on regular
Intervals.
Characteristics of AutoCAD

• The use of AutoCAD software provides enhanced

graphic capabilities which allow the designers to:
1. Conceptualization of Ideas using AutoCAD
2. Easy modification of the engineering designs
3. Perform design calculations quickly
4. Use colures, fonts, textures, and other aesthetic
Features
5. Know your product’s strength using simulations
AutoCAD in Present Day

1. AutoCAD is one of leading and the best known

Computer Aided Design(CAD) software being
used worldwide.
2. It is used in all kinds of industry sectors where
drafting, modeling and design are core functions.
3. AutoCAD is the widely recommended solution
available to the drafters as it makes drawing and
drafting very easy and handy work.
Advantages of AutoCAD

1. AutoCAD enhances the productivity and quality of

designs.
2. Drawings get prepared in relatively shorter duration.
3. Reduced the manpower requirement .
4. AutoCAD software is cost effective and highly
affordable.
5. Designs can be drawn with greater accuracy.
6. Facilitates easy modification and revision of
drawings
The X-Y Coordinate System
Measuring Angle In AutoCAD
Inserting Point In AutoCAD

1. Absolute Co- ordinates (X,Y)

2. Relative Co- ordinates (@X,Y)
3. Polar Co- ordinates (@D,A)
Starting AutoCad 2007
AutoCAD 2007 menus and toolbars

• When AutoCAD 2007 is opened a window

appears, depending upon whether a Classic
AutoCAD, a 3D Modeling or an AutoCAD
Default.
• The following figure shows the Classic
AutoCAD workspace.

Menu Bar
• The menu bar is situated under the title bar and
contains names of menus from which commands can be
selected.
Tool Bar
The Tool bar is situated under the Menu bar (in Horizontal or
vertical position) and allows the user to access Icons from
which commands can be selected. Eg.Standard toolbar

Eg- Draw and modify Toolbars
The Draw toolbar; contains buttons to
represent each of the major drawing
commands, including Line, Polygon,
Rectangle, Arc, Circle, ……etc.
Tool Bar Cont’d…
The Modify toolbar; contains buttons to represent
commands that can be used to edit drawing objects
such as Erase, Copy, Mirror, Offset, Array, Move, and
Rotate
Tool Bar Cont’d…
Status bar; The status bar is located below the command
line

Buttons in the status bar can be used for toggling

(turning on/off) various functions that can be used to
control drawing aids besides the coordinate display.
The AutoCAD UCS (User coordinate system)

The UCS icon- indicates the direction of the three

coordinate axes X, Y and Z.
• In the AutoCAD drawing area it is shown as arrows
pointing in the directions of the axes or describes the current
coordinate system and orientation of the drawing area.
• When working in 2D, only the X and Y axes are shown, but
when the drawing area is in a 3D view all three coordinate
arrows are shown, except when the model is in the XY
plane. See the fig below
