AUSTRALIAN LAW

ENFORCEMENT
HISTORY
• First civilian police force was created in 1789 in Sydney Town formed by Gov.
Arthur Philip known as “The Night Watcher”.

• First man appointed is John Smith and The first woman appointed and had the
detective rank is Lillian Armfield.

• Then after, The South Australian Police Force is the oldest centrally controlled
police service in Australia and one of the oldest in the world. formed in April 28
1838 due to the concerns of felonies entering new settlement from neighboring
colonies.

• In 1917, a new police force was formed the Commonwealth Police Force until in
1979, the current and the primary law enforcement is the Australian Police Force.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
ELIGIBILITY
To be a police officer in the AFP, you must:
• Be 18 years of age or over
• Be an Australian citizen
• Hold a valid full, provisional or automatic-only driver's licence
• Have at least a Year 10 certificate with a Cert IV/Diploma level
qualification or Trade Certificate. University-level qualifications are
welcomed.
• Of sound character
• Able to satisfy medical and fitness requirements
• Strong sense of leadership
• Good communication skills
• Great decision making skills
• Understanding yet confident
APPLICATION
There is a seven-step process to becoming an Australian Federal Police
officer:

1.Register 
2.Pass the AFP Entrance Exam
3.Pass the fitness assessment
4.Complete a detailed application
5.Pass a medical and psychological assessment
6.Pass a security assessment 
7.Attend the two-day Assessment Centre course.
TRAINING
•Located in an historic building in Barton, Canberra

•Facilities include lounge area, dining room, three courtyards, fully equipped
gym, training and computer rooms and a library

•Recruits are accommodated in single bedrooms with king-single bed,


computer with internet access and ensuite bathroom

•Recruit training for police is approximately 24 weeks

•Recruit training for protective service officer recruits is approximately 14


weeks.

NOTE: If AQIS detects contamination during inspection the
entire cargo will be ordered into quarantine and the matter is
referred to the National Manager Border Programs for decision.
Based on the information provided by the importer, AQIS will
assess if the quarantine risk posed by the contamination can be
addressed.

TYPE OF CONTRACT: SMALL BUSINESS LOAN CONTRACT
ASIC CONCERN: ASIC and the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise
Ombudsman (ASBFEO) conducted are view of small business loan contracts offered by the
‘big four’ banks. ASIC and the ASBFEO were concerned that the banks had not done enough
to ensure their small business loan contracts complied with the UCT provisions. ASIC
conducted a further review of small business loan contracts offered by mid-tier lenders,
mutual and fintechs.
REGULATORY OUTCOME: The reviews have led to the lenders making changes to their
small business loan contracts, and brought about wider change across the industry. ASIC has
also commenced proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against the Bank of
Queensland and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank concerning unfair contract terms in small
business contracts.

Concentrate efforts on addressing crime problems that present the greatest
threat to the safety, security and cohesiveness of communities, While each
jurisdiction experiences different types and levels of criminal offending and
victimization, a number particular attention. The following issues have been
identified as requiring a concerted and coordinated response:
• reducing alcohol-related violence;
• improving the safety of young people;
• improving the safety of Indigenous people;
• preventing child abuse and neglect; and
• reducing violence against women.

Over many years, each Australian state and territory police service has developed different
information and communications technology platforms and data management methods. The
exchange of policing information to prevent or solve crimes is critical, as is the need to ensure that
any data about an individual is accurate, protected and shared in strict accordance with Australian
law.
Crime Stoppers programs run in each state and nationally. Crime Stoppers collects information
about crime and passes it on to the police ensuring that the community can participate in crime
fighting.
CRIMTRAC is an intergovernmental policing agency that supports Australian policing through
the provision of forensic and other information and investigative tools between State and Federal
Police Departments. The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) is
national fingerprint database, administered by CrimTrac.
