Silkscreen Printing: 6Th Grade

This document provides instructions for a 6th grade lesson on silkscreen printing. It defines silkscreen printing as using a piece of tightly stretched silk with a stencil to print designs by squeezing ink through the open areas. The learning objectives are for students to understand the process, technology that has made it accessible, and apply concepts by demonstrating the step-by-step process. Materials needed include a printing screen, squeegee, inks, paper or fabric, and supplies for mixing colors and cleaning. Four stencil methods - paper, glue, hand-cut film, and photo stencils - are described for creating different effects.

b. Understand that digital technology has sped up the
printing of original designs and made it accessible to
many, as emphasized in T-shirts and poster designs
c. Apply concepts on the steps/procedures in silkscreen
printing.

Silkscreen Printing

The design is printed by squeezing ink through the open

areas of a piece of silk that has been very tightly stretched on
a wooden frame. The unprinted area of the silk is blocked out
with a stencil, but the space to be printed is left open..

Filipinos who are into silkscreen business use manual screen

printing, digital printing, or both.
Here are the materials you
will need for your
silkscreen prints:
Printing Screen - an adult can construct your printing
frame and silk for the screen. The silk is woven in different
mesh sizes, from size 6 to 25.
Squeegee - since the squeegee pushes the ink
evenly through the silk mesh onto the paper or
fabric, choose one smaller than your printing
screen.
Inks – Many silkscreen inks are available at supplies
stores or art stores. You can use poster inks when
printing on paper or fabric inks when printing on fabric.
Paper or Fabric to Print on
Plastic spoons and cups, palette knife, empty jars old
newspapers, paint thinner. cardboard, clean rags- for
mixing colors and cleaning
Green film, photo emulsion, hair dryer, and a
lamp - for hand-cut film and photo stencils
Silkscreen printing is best done in a
cool, well-ventilated room because
sometimes the fumes from the Ink
and thinner can be pretty strong, and
the rag thinner is flammable.
Four Stencil Methods In Silkscreen Printing:

Paper Stencils - are the easiest to work with for

simple designs, and the materials are inexpensive.
You can use any thin paper. If you want a rough-
edged effect, you can use torn paper shapes.
Glue Stencils or Blockout Stencils-diluted
mixture of glue is applied on the screen. This
method can show drips and spatters, giving your
silkscreen prints a painterly effect.
Hand-Cut Film - this method works best when your
design has small, loose, floating parts, or different
shapes with clean corners and angles.
Photo Stencils - if your design has photographic Images,
fine lines, lettering, and other intricate details, you should
choose this method. Light is used to expose an image to
make a stencil. Once exposed, you need to develop it, wash it
out, then adhere it to the screen.
