Introduction
The first paragraph is the
introductory paragraph. It
introduces the problem and gives
the background information
necessary for the argument and the
thesis statement.
THESIS STATEMENT IN
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS
Takes a side of an issue; frequently
proposes an approach of action often
expressed with the modal should.

Example: “Governments should ban


further construction of nuclear power
plants.
Body
Contains the reasons supported
by supporting details or
materials (examples, statistics,
personal experiences, or
quotations).
Conclusion
Restates the main claim and
presents one or more general
statements which accurately
summarize the arguments which
support the main premise.

CLAIMS
To review, argumentative
claims are classified into
three, namely, claim of
fact, claim of policy, and
claim of value.
A good claim is
well-supported,
reliable and well-
explained.
In an argumentative essay, the
writer is the only one who is
allowed to speak. Therefore it is
important that an argumentative
essay is capable of prompting an
interior debate with him/her and
the assumed readers.

TO MAKE YOUR CLAIMS
MORE CREDIBLE AND
CONVINCING
Citing Authorities
Cite an authority rather than someone
who doesn’t have enough qualifications
to speak about your claims.
This will mean that you are supporting
your claims through referring to people,
organizations, agencies, and others that
are professional and very reliable.
Using Personal Experiences
Although rarely used because of its
persuasive nature, using personal
experiences is a good shot as long as you
don’t lie about your experiences.
The experiences you share may not have
scientific explanations, but it can win the
hearts of your readers because readers can
relate to your stories.
Using
Analogies
Analogy is a very convincing way of
making argumentative claims because
you let your readers understand your
point more.
Analogies also help you get your
point across.
A claim is a statement that can be proven.

It is not obvious, and it is not from personal


opinion.

A strong claim is specific and


objective in nature.
