Fatty Acids

This document discusses the biological importance of fatty acids. It begins by defining fatty acids as the building blocks of fat in our bodies and food. Fatty acids are usually joined in triglyceride molecules. There are two main classifications of fatty acids: saturated and unsaturated. Examples of each type are provided. The document then discusses the structure of fatty acids and their key biological importance, such as being essential for humans and playing important roles in cell membranes, heart health, bone health, and more.

WHAT IS FATTY ACID ?

 Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the
food we eat. During digestion, the body breaks down fats into fatty
acids, which can then be absorbed into the blood. Fatty acid
molecules are usually joined together in groups of three, forming a
molecule called a triglyceride. Triglycerides are also made in our
bodies from the carbohydrates that we eat.
CLASSIFICATION OF FATTY ACID :

 Saturated fatty acids

 Unsaturated fatty acids
EXAMPLE OF FATTY ACID:

 Examples of saturated fatty acids are Palmitic acid, stearic acid etc.
Examples of unsaturated fatty acids include Oleic acid, Linoleic acid etc.
STRUCTURE OF FATTY ACIDS:
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF FATTY
ACID:

 Essential fatty acids, or EFAS, are fatty acids that humans and other animals must
ingest because the body requiresthem for good health but cannot synthesize them
Only two fatty acids are known to be essential for humans: alpha-lindlenic acid
(an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleicacid (an omega-6 fatty acid)
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF FATTY
ACID:
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF FATTY
ACID:

 They act on DNA (activating or inhibiting transcription factors such as NF-s, which is inked to
proinflammatory cytokine production
 High intakes of omega-3 fatty acids are linked to decreased rates of major depression Without
omega 3 and omega 6human or animal wil suffer in sick.
 Omiga-3 fatty acids in algal all, fish oil, fish and seafood have been shown to lower the risk of
heart attacks
 Omega-6 fatty acids in sunflower oil and safflower oil may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular
disease.
 One gram of fat gives you nine calories of energy, which is over twice that provided by
carbohydrates or protein. Fatenables your body to transport, store and absorb the fast-soluble
vitamins A, D, E and I.
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANANCE OF FATTY
ACID:

 Cell Membranes: Require (50%) fatty acids to be "waterproof" and function

properly.
 Heart: Prefers saturated long chain 16-carbon palmitic and 18-c stearic acid (over
carbohydrates) for energy.
 Bones: Need fats to assimilate calcium effectively.-
 Liver: They protect it from the adverse effects of alcohol and medications like
acetaminophen
 Lungs: Lung surfactant, which prevents asthma and other breathing disorders,
iscomposed entirely of 16-c palmitic acids
BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF FATTY
ACID:

 Hormones: They function as signaling messengers for hormone production.

 Immune system: Saturated fatty acids play an important role here. They prime
white blood cells to destroy invading bacteria, viruses and fungi and to fight
tumors. Medium chain 12-c lauric acids and 14-c myristic acid(in butter) kill
bacteria and candida in the gut.
