What’s my target?
At the end of this module, you are expected to
distinguish text – types according:
• to purpose,
• to classify,
• to describe, or;
• to explain.
What am I good at?
Directions: Read each short text below. Write its purpose
whether it classifies, describes or explains.
_____1. The amount of water on earth remains constant. But
its form is always changing from solid to liquid, from liquid
to gas, and back again. It moves in pattern called water
cycle. Heat from the sun causes water in oceans, lakes, and
rivers to evaporate into vapor. Further, vapor is given off by
plants and animals.
_____2. Test questions generally fall into two categories depending on
how they are answered: objective and subjective. The objective type
questions have definite right and wrong answers. Multiple choice and fill
in the blanks questions are objective. The subjective test items on the other
hand such as essay questions have no single correct answers. Instead, there
is a range of possible responses. Students must know the information in
order to answer each question.
_____3. Trisha stirred the large stock pot of stew, watching as flashes of
bright orange carrot and stark white potato and danced around,
occasionally peeking through the thick brown liquid as it bubbled and
steamed.

Informational Text-
Type According to
Purpose
Text type is a way of classifying various language expressions. It can be
spoken or written. The purpose of a text and the way it is written are defined.
Types of text according to purpose:
1. Descriptive text- details the characteristics features of something. It
describes persons, places, objects or events. It reports sights, sounds,
smell, tastes and feelings of the subjects.
2. Explanation text- explains how or why the things occur. It looks into the
causes and reasons of things.
3. Classifying text- categorizes someone or something based on certain
traits. It begins with a main idea. It discusses the subcategories of the
topic. A certain group is formed.
What’s more to do?
Directions: Distinguish the text type being described. (Description,
Explanation, Classification)

CLASSIFIES, DESCRIBES, or EXPLAINS.
___________1. A gentle breeze rusted through the willows. The open
fleeting air in the city smelled at orange blossoms and freshly baked apple
pie.
___________2. Spynax is my dog. He is adorable. He has orange fur with
black and white spots. I like to cuddle him for his soft fur.
___________3. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide released into the air.
They are released into the air by fossil fuels. They are the biggest cause of
acid rain today. A chemical reaction happens in sulfur dioxide and nitrogen
oxides. They mix with water, oxygen, and other chemicals.
___________4. Dogs are domesticated animals that have been living
with humans for generations. Dogs can be classified in a number of
different ways. For example, they can be classified by breed that
includes beagles, basset hounds, poodles, and others. They can also
be classified by their role in the lives of their master and the work
they do.
___________5. Plants are really important for the planet and for all
living things. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen from
their leaves which humans and other animals need to breathe.

Directions: Paste a paragraph or a text inside the box. Write whether
it explains, describes, or classify.
