TOYOTA EIGHT STEP PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS

Step 1 • Ultimate Goal or Purpose


Clarify the Problem • Ideal and Current Situation = GAP

Step 2 • Breakdown into manageable pieces using the 4 W’s


Breakdown the Problem • Find Prioritized problem, Process, and Point of Occurrence

Step 3 • Set target to the Point of Occurrence


Target Setting • Determine “How much” and “By When” (Achievable)

Step 4 • Brainstorm multiple Potential Causes by asking WHY


Root Cause Analysis • Determine Root Cause by using Genchi Genbutsu

Step 5 • Brainstorm Countermeasures, narrow using criteria


Develop Countermeasures • Develop a detailed action plan, and gain consensus

Step 6 • Share status of plan by reporting, informing and consulting


See Countermeasures Through • Build consensus, never give up, think and act persistently

Step 7 • Determine if the target was achieved


Monitor Process and Result • Evaluate 3 viewpoints, and look at process and results

Step 8 • Standardize Successful practices


Standardize and Share best Practice • Share results and start the next round of kaizen
