Presented by Hamna Shabbir Roll no: 3 Biography of Dario Fo • 1: Dario Fo was an Italian playwright, actor and director. • 2:He was awarded noble prize in literature in 1997. • 3:He was born in Sangiano a small town in Lombardy region of Italy. • 4:In the early 1950s he began his career as a performer in the Italian theater. • 5:In 1953 he formed a theater company with his wife Franca Rame and together they began to develop a unique style of political theater that combined satire. Summary • The play is a satire that critiques the corruption and abuses of power in the Italian government and police during the 1960s. • The story is based on the real-life events surrounding the death of an anarchist who fell out of a police station window in Milan in 1969. The play centers around a character known as the Maniac, who poses as a judge investigating the incident. • The play is known for its use of farce, physical comedy, and absurdity to comment on serious political issues. Characterization • The main character or protagonist of the play is Meniac. A madman who impersonates various figures of authority and play tricks on police officer investigating the anarchist death. He has arrested multiple times and claims to be former psychiatrist. • Second character is Inspector Bertozzo. A police officer who is investigating the death of an anarchist who fell out of a window. Bertozzo is portrayed as a typical police officer who is obedient to his superiors and follows orders without questioning them. He is initially suspious of Maniac but later becomes increasingly frustrated and exasperated with him . Characterization • Third character is Superintendent. He is a corrupt and authoritian figure who represents the oppressive system of an Italian government during the time in which play was written. He is high ranking police officer who is tasked with investigating the death of an anarchist who fell from a window while in police custody. • Fourth character is constable Pisani. He is lower ranking police officer who is assigned to guard the office where anarchist was being held before his death. Pisani is portrayed as a bumbling and somewhat dim witted character who is easily manipulated by those in power. Characterization • Fifth character is Journalist Maria Feletti. He represents the media and relationship with government and police. Journalist is initially presented as being critical of the police force and their handling of an anarchist death but as the play progresses he becomes more and more complicit in the lies and deceptions of the police. • Sixth character is Magistrate. Magistrate is a powerful and corrupt figure who represents the Italian government and its collusion with police force. Magistrates is initially presented as being detached from situation with little interest in death of anarchist or actions of police. Magistrates character serves to highlight corruption and collusion that existed between Italian government and police force. Characterization • Next character is Sports Jacket. He is a police officer who is part of investigation into death of an anarchist. Sports jacket is a representation of corrupt and oppressive police force. He is portrayed as being dishonest,violent and willing to do anything to protect his position of power. • Last character is Anarchist. A character who is not physically present in the play but whose death is the central focus of the plot. Anarchist is presented as witty and subversive character who is unafraid to challenge authority and expose the injustice of the system.
