PRESENTATION OUTLINE
•The equation is used to calculate the magnetic field produced by a current is known as the Biot-Savart
law.
•It is an empirical law named in honor of two scientists who investigated the interaction between a
straight, current-carrying wire and a permanent magnet.
•This law enables us to calculate the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field produced by a
current in a wire.
•It generally relates the magnetic field to the magnitude, direction, length and the proximity of the
electric current.
•It is consistent with both ampere’s circuital law and gauss’s law.
•The magnetic flux density(dB) is directly proportional to the length(dl) and the current(I) and the sine of
the angle(θ) that is between the direction of the current and the vector joining a given point of the
magnetic field and the current element and is inversely proportional to the square of the distance to the
given point.
IMPORTANCES OF BIOT SAVART LAW
• The Biot-Savart law states that at any point P the magnetic field due to an
element of a current carrying wire is given by
•
• The constant is known as the permeability of free space and is exactly
•
• The infinitesimal wire segment is in the same direction as the current I (assumed
positive), r is the distance from to P and r is a unit vector that points from to P.
• The direction of is determined by applying the right-hand rule to the vector
product . The magnitude of

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BIOT SAVART
LAW AND AMPERE’S CIRCUITAL LAW
• To calculate the magnetic field in an indefinitely long straight wire owing to a constant
current
• To calculate the magnetic field in the centre of a current-carrying arc
• To calculate the force between two parallel and lengthy current-carrying conductors
• To calculate the magnetic field along the axis of a circular current-carrying coil
• We can use Biot–Savart law to calculate magnetic responses even at the atomic or
molecular level.
• It is also used in aerodynamic theory to calculate the velocity induced by vortex lines
