THE CONTINGENCY APPROACH

P R E PA R E D B Y:
NIMESH PURI S O F I YA K A R K I SUPRABHA SHRESTHA

INTRODUCTION
Class of behavioral theory that claims that there is no

best way to organize a corporation or to lead a corporation to make decisions.

Best way of organizing, is, however contingent upon the

internal and external situation of the company.

Contingent simply means that the effect of one

variable, A, on another variable, B, is contingent upon the third variable, C.

Introduction (Contd)
Tailors the design of the company to the sources

of environmental uncertainties faced by the organization.

Three main characteristics of Contingency

Approach: An Open-System perspective A practical Research Orientation A Multivariate Approach

Contributions and Advantages

Contingency theory attempts to provide a perspective on

organizations and management based on the integration of prior theories.

First applications of contingency theory came from

research conducted by two British scholars, Thomas Burns and G. M. Stalker, who concluded that the appropriate managerial techniques were highly dependent on the kind of task the organization was trying to accomplish.

Contributions and advantages(contd..)

Identification of two organization types: Mechanistic: for a task that is routine and unchanging. Organic: for a task that is nonroutine and changing.

Main attraction of Contingency Approach is its

situational perspective.
Various

leadership theories including Fiedler Contingency Theory are based on Contingent Approach.

Limitations and Criticism

This theory creates an impression that the organization

is captive of its environment. failed to explain fully why people with certain leadership styles are more effective in some situations then others. It fails to explain adequately what organizations should do when there is a mismatch between the leader and the situation in the workplace. Complex Reactive not proactive

Limitations and criticisms(contd..)

Atheoritical When this theory is tested in real-life situations,

it may often fail.

Conclusion
With the application of contingency approach: We will be able to identify and to solve

problems under different situations. We will recognize that the successful application of a technique in one situation does not guarantee success in another. As a result, our overall ability to correct problems and to become more effective as a manager will increase.
