TYPES OF

PREJUDICE
OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the types of prejudices on
the different situations presented;
PREJUDICE is an assumption or an opinion
about someone simply based on that person's
membership to a particular group. It is pre-
judging someone before knowing the person on
a deeper level. It is not based on reason or
actual experience.

1. RACISM - the belief that different races possess
distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities,
especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or
superior to one another.
Example: unequal treatment, being deprived of a job, a
house, or education because of difference in race.
2. SEXISM - prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination,
based on sex, particularly against women, (gender
inequality).

Example: men can do better than women; men are paid


bigger than women.
3. AGEISM - prejudice or discrimination on the
grounds of a person's age.
4. CLASSISM - refers to treating people unequally
based on the social class in which they belong to.
Three primary social classes exist in the Philippines:
the low-income class, the middle-income class, and
the high-income class.

Example: difference in treatment based on social class;


rich are treated better than the poor.
5. HOMOPHOBIA - discrimination against
homosexuality or gay people.

Example: legal restrictions or, in extreme cases,


bullying or even violence against homosexuals
(sometimes called “gay bashing”)
6. NATIONALISM - interests of one's own nation
viewed as separate from the interests of other nations.

Example: an ideology by people who believe their


nation is superior to all others
7. RELIGIOUS PREJUDICE - Religious prejudice means
negative attitudes or behavior between people of
different religious groups because of their differing
religious beliefs.

Example: Someone refuses to serve you, sell you


something you need because of difference in religion.
8. XENOPHOBIA - dislike of or prejudice against
people from other countries.

Example: A Filipino who dislikes a group of Chinese

2. A job given to a man instead to a more
qualified woman (a mother)
3. A rich woman given a better service compared
to a farmer’s wife.
4. Two gay couple humiliated in a public place
5. A Muslim student being disqualified in a
scholarship sponsored by a Christian religious group.
6. A group of Filipinos being humiliated by foreigners.
7. A young graduate being offered a job instead of a
more experienced middle-aged man.
8. A belief that no other products are better than our
own.
