Feedback Mechanisms Involved in Reproductive System

Negative feedback loops play an important role in regulating the reproductive system. In the male reproductive system, negative feedback mechanisms control processes like spermatogenesis and testosterone production. In the female system, the hypothalamus and pituitary gland use negative feedback to regulate the menstrual cycle and control ovulation through hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Fertilization begins the process of human development, which progresses through stages like cleavage, blastulation, and organogenesis as the embryo develops over months into a fetus.

FEEDBACK MECHANISMS

INVOLVED IN REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
Coordinated Functions of Nervous System, Endocrine System
and Reproductive System
Goal
 Identify different processes in male
and female reproductive system
 Describe the feedback mechanisms

involved in regulating processes in

the reproductive system
Feedback Mechanisms
 Negative feedback loops play an important role in how
many of the systems of the human body stay in control. A
negative feedback loop is a type of self-regulating system.
In a negative feedback loop, increased output from the
system inhibits future production by the system. In other
words, the system controls how much product it makes by
shutting down manufacturing when levels of output or the
amount of accumulated product gets too high.
 Negative feedback systems are responsible for many types
of hormone regulation in the human body. They are good at
maintaining relatively constant levels of output
Gametogenesis

Process of producing gametes (sex

cells)
 Spermatogenesis- process of

producing sperm cells (male)

 Oogenesis- process of producing egg

cell (female)
Feedback Mechanism in Male Reproductive System
Ovulation
 Process of producing and releasing of mature egg
cell for fertilization
Menstrual Cycle
 From day 1 to 5:
Menstrual phase
 From day 1 to 13:
Follicular phase
 Day 14: Ovulation
phase
 From day 15 to 28:
Luteal phase
Feedback Mechanisms in Female Reproductive
System
Stages of Human Development
Fertilization
The unfertilized egg is activated by fusion with the
sperm in the fallopian tube.
Cleavage
 The zygote cleaves by mitosis as it moves down the
uterus.
Blastulation
 The embryo forms a hollow ball and 3-6 days after
fertilization becomes implanted in the uterus.
Gastrulation
 The placenta forms around 2-week old embryo.
Neurulation
 The 3-week old embryo, 2mm in size, develops
muscle tissues, vertebra, and blood vessels, nervous
system.
Organogenesis
 The one month old embryo is ½ cm in size, forms
body organs.
Continued Morphogenesis
 The embryo, now 2 months, shows miniature limbs
as hands, arms, elbows, legs, knees.
End of 1st trimester
 The fetus, now 3 months, has completed organs.
2nd trimester
 There is heartbeat detected, fine body hairs. The
fetus is foot long and 2 ¼ pounds.
3rd trimester
 There is a period of growth, the fetus reaches 6-9
pounds.
